!!!!!! appearing on phone

I recently downloaded from Google Playstore an app called Signal which allows me to speak to my daughter overseas using wifi.

Since downloading this app onto my phone (Android 6), each time I open Signal these pictures pop up - they are either Chinese or Japanese.

I have emailed the developers but wondered if anybody here has come across this particular problem and can help me get rid of it please?

In the meantime, I've run Malwarebytes on my phone, but no malware found.

Any specific reason why you are not using mainstream apps, like Skype or Whatsapp?
If the app you downloaded has a lot of ads, I don't think there is much you can do, apart from uninstalling it and using something else.

Only that my daughter suggested using it. She is using an iphone so claims never to receive ads (not convinced, but she's working on converting me:))

Just remove the app and convince your daughter to stick to a more secure one, such as whatsapp.

As I said, if this app (which I don't know) only provides a way of making calls/video calls over the Internet, then I would feel much safer using one of the other, better known apps.

Thanks, I will see if the developers respond, but in any event will try to persuade my daughter to use one of the other apps as suggested.

I really doubt they will do something about it, as this is how they make money.

I don't really have a problem with ads per se - no such thing as "free", but there is a limit:)

Or even FB Messenger (there's a Lite version), or Google Hangouts, or Viber.

I've successfully used Skype, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to video chat with friends overseas on WiFi.

How did you reach the conclusion that WhatsApp is more secure than Signal?
