I am in search of a router with a built in modem that is suitable for using in uni halls for gaming ( xbox live to be precise )
I understand it needs to be a MIMO & ADSL.
I know nothing & have simply given you the info passed on to me.
I have looked at loads on ebuyer & the reviews are often confusing, think I'll go for X & read reviews so start over again....etc etc.
It will be connected to a laptop if that's any help.
I would be very grateful for any recommendations as this is def not my field of knowledge at all.
Pricewise...well we are on moneysaver so the cheaper the better really.
Thanks

Firstly you need a phone line, do you have one? are you allowed to have on fitted living in halls? you sign up with an ISP and they make the line ready for ADSL. you connect your modem or router with modem to the ADSL line and configure it. You then connect your laptop and xbox to the router either with wires or wireless. Now normally in halls your rooms isnt that big so it will be cheaper to use wires, the 360 wireless adaptor is stupidly expensive for what it is just hide them behind stuff stick them down whatever.
MIMO is a standard of wireless adsl supposed to give up to 300mbps by using multiple transmiters. ADSL in the UK is up to 8mbps so you dont need anything more than a standard 54mbps wireless connection unless you are a distance from the wireless router then the improved signal stength will help.0 -
Not sure if there is a phoneline in the room.
All the rooms do have internet though I imagine it's quite busy at certain times of the day ( or night ).0 -
if all the rooms have the internet then why do you need a modem/router???
if its wireless you need a wireless card. all/most newish lappys have it built in.
if its ethernet sockets in the room, you need a ethernet straight cable.Get some gorm.0 -
You need to find out what is already in place before you go buying stuff.0

Something to consider as well is that the existing network/internet that is in the room will probably be going through a firewall, which from experience will block some/all games. We found that a problem at uni with PC games.
Just my 2cents!

Uni is only 32 weeks of the year tops. It's used here on home breaks so not bought solely for uni just hoped it could be taken to halls & used there.0 -

2 cents well spent, thanks.
We do now think this is more to do with it but I asked in a shop & was advised to get a router/modem thing which was why I asked here as it seemed that would 'fix' the problem...clearly it's more technical than that.
Will do a bit more searching as I know an xbox can be used in halls just need to work out how.

No worries. A question if i may. When you say you want to use an xbox in halls...presumably you mean to play across the internet..? If you just want to network with your flatmates then you could set up a independant wireless network quite easily as long as it did't require internet access...??0

Yes, to play across the internet.
I believe it is possible as students on another forum mention doing so although all halls/unis are different.
Thanks for your help I guess I asked the wrong ? but I did say it wasn't my field so to speak.0 -

You have too much cash
Firstly find out what they have at Uni.
So for 32/52 weeks you are going to have no broadband at home, but your folks will be paying for the line and you have the equipment?
When you leave uni, are you moving back home? If not, who knows what service you will subscribe to (adsl, adsl2, cable, fiber), or even if there is an existing adsl connection there, or if the landlord will allow you to even put a phone in.
By the time you finish uni, there will be many newer models of router. perhaps even ip6? Newer protocols??? Definitely a new version of windows or two.GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.
