What about a gear lever lock? Less bulky than steering wheel locks.

I have one of those for when I park up in dodgy places.

I have recently bought a new car and so did a bit of research on theft prevention. Disc-lock and Stop-lock Pro are the only mechanical anti theft devices recommended. I personally went for the Stop-lock because it is slightly easier to use and store in the car.

But, I am not relying on this. I am using this as a visible deterrent and instead, I have fitted a Ghost, which is a great bit of equipment - in my opinion. No stickers or anything informing the thief it is fitted. I am just relying on the thief taking the time to get past the Stop-lock and then finding they can't get the car going due to the Ghost.

However, nothing will stop them picking it up on the back of a low loader and driving away with it.
Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

I have a Ford, so thanks for that!

I think it is fairly easy to defeat the electronic security on most cars if you have access to the obd port, but there are so many Fords about, and their security code database has been hacked/cracked and available for so long that they are one of the most popular to steal this way.

Well, the thieves have a clean getaway at least.

My neighbour had his boy racer fiesta (2016) stolen.

The thieves popped the drivers window glass, plugged a laptop into the obd port, defeated all the security and drove it away. (well, we surmised this from the drivers window glass fragments on the drive, and the fact that Fords are almost as easy to steal as rangerovers.)

Amazingly he got it back, now he has a disklok on the steering wheel, and one of those alarms that chirps if you go within 10 feet of it.

That can't happen with the latest Fiesta

“Four out of five series of new Fiesta include a Thatcham category one alarm as standard.

“This means that once set the in-built alarm system sounds if the car is entered by person or object, there is movement in the cabin, any attempt is made to raise the car (to remove a wheel or tow it away) or the ignition is brought live without a correctly coded key being present.

“The system has a battery back-up power supply to safeguard against disconnection from the car’s battery.

“With many new Fords, even if criminals break in to reach the OBD port (the diagnostic port within the vehicle used by dealer technicians to access the vehicle’s electrical system), any attempt to plug into the car’s diagnostics automatically initiates a 10-minute software lockdown, while the alarm continues to be emitted. "

I assume that means they've sorted the movement sensor black spot between the drivers window and the ODB port.

Sounds like a good start (a code would be better) and it begs the question if it would be possible for Ford to patch the ECU on existing vehicles and give them the 10 minute lockdown?
