Metro Bank increases usage charges outside the SEPA

Options
Metro Bank will be upping charges for usage outside the SEPA from 10th January 2019.

It's not the first card I proffered outside 'Europe' anyway.

Cards offering free worldwide usage are more common now than they were before.

  • It's a well-trodden path - offer free overseas usage to get new customers, once you have sucked them in, remove the perk and hope that most people stick around.

I left Nationwide when they did it, and I am abandoning Metro now that they have done it. My Starling Bank joint account is up and running and will be used as long as it offers this perk.
  • Yep getting 1.135 yesterday in Portugal with Starling, no fees whatsoever including a cash withdrawal.
    Ethical moneysaver

Metro haven't removed anything, it was free to use inside SEPA and still is. It was never a best option outside of SEPA. I will carry on using mine when I travel to Europe rather than cutting off my nose to spite my face as you are doing.

It used to include free usage worldwide, when it was a best buy. That was removed several years ago.

Was it? That's not my recollection, but I haven't travelled outside of SEPA since I first opened the account (at least 5 years ago) so it may be that it never came to my attention.

I opened mine in 2013 and it was free worldwide. It's the only reason I opened the account.

I'm thinking of switching to Starling or Monzo, since I rarely use the store network anyway.
