Changing boiler timer to daily programmable

I'm considering changing the thermostat / timer on my boiler to a more sophisticated version, but I'm confused about which elements specifically would need replacing.
My current system
Timer on boiler : https://city-plumbing-supplies.scene7.com/is/image/travisperkins/GPID_1000214299_00?defaultImage=travisperkins/missing-product&id=VduTl0&fmt=jpg&fit=constrain,1&wid=424&hei=395
Thermostat : https://city-plumbing-supplies.scene7.com/is/image/travisperkins/largeNormal/Thermostats-Drayton-Digistat-RF601-Digital-Wireless-Room-Thermostat~I0310_228375_00?defaultImage=travisperkins/missing-product
What I'm looking for in upgrade
- ability to set different schedules on different days, with at least 4 periods per day
- ability to "boost" or "advance" the heating (without setting to "on" and needed to remember to set back to timed)
Not looking for the expense of a smart (Hive / Nest) type system as I'm not convinced I would recoup the benefit while living here.

You were only killing time and it'll kill you right back

The easy way is to just replace the thermostat with a programmable one and just leave the existing timer on 24/7
when I looked before going smart/internet connected I was aiming towards the honeywell 7 days standalone options.
https://www.honeywelluk.com/products/programmable-thermostats/tpi/CM927/
the 7 series are a bit cheaper than the 9
there are cheaper options with similar features
You may find one to work with the existing wireless link like this(there is a cheaper 24hr that means same times every day)
https://www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-rf701sx-room-thermostat/768160 -
You could just leave the timer on 24hr a day and buy a Drayton programmable stat.
Link your new stat to the wireless receiver you already have and away you go. You can do that your self easily enough.0 -

So I buy this?

Which replaces this? (currently in hallway)

But I keep this (currently under boiler), and link to the new thermostat?

Link 1 is nothing but I'm guessing it's a Drayton digistat 3 or similar so yes just swap this with your current stat and re link to receiver under the boiler.
To link the receiver and new thermostat
Turn power off and then back on
Press and hold 1 and 2 until the red led blinks
Let go of both buttons
Put battery's in new thermostat0 -
The link is to the +2 I think that is the 24hr one you need the +3 a 7day timer to get different times on different days.
edit:
part No.
Rf700 is the +2 24hr
RF701 is the +3 5-2/7day(as per screwfix link above)
I think these can both only do 3 on periods a day so if you really want 4 you may need to look at a different system0 -
Updated the post above.
If you spend the extra for something better that can give more control and maybe on-line/phone access you could take it with you if you move(swap back the existing stat).
Most of the savings come from the ability to have the heating off more when out and away so as you say you can get most of that with a 7 day 5-2 is very popular for people with week day weekend patterns.
If you have more irregular patterns and the times need changing a smarter system will be a lot more convenient0 -
We upgraded our boiler on/off with a single time slot and a single temperature heating thermostat to a Hive.
The boiler is now set to permanently on, but it is turned on/off by the Hive.
We mainly got it so we can have mon-fri evening heating and then weekend heating.
Being able to set different temperatures at different periods of the day is useful, as well has being able to hit the boost button on your phone when you're feeling cold.0 -

I think I wasn't clear about the time periods - I want at least 2 on periods (morning and evening) and 2 off periods (daytime and overnight)... So sound like the RF701 may be suitable :jYou were only killing time and it'll kill you right back0 -
Just to give you a full picture, you could fit a hive very easily.
The hive receiver has the same back plate as the Drayton receiver so would just be a case of undoing the to grub screws under the receiver and lifting the Drayton one of and replace with the hive receiver.0
