N.i.p

Today I received 2 N.I.P through the post. The alledged offence took place on 9th Oct, and I have been caught by a mobile speed van going in both directions. The speed limit on the road is 30mph, and I was caught doing 36 mph and 37 mph. I am obviously going to return the N.I.P's as I was driving, but what I wanted to know is, can you plead mitigating circumstances against a N.I.P? At the time I was on my way to my mother who has servere Dementia, and I had received a phone call from her neighbour saying that she was in some distress :(, so I was travelling faster than normal as obviously I wanted to get there as soon as I could. I know this is no excuse for speeding, but under normal circumstances, I would not of been travelling on this road or if I was I would not of been speeding. If this is not an option, then I am hoping I may be offered a speed awareness course, as I have not been fined for speeding in all the 20+yrs that I have been driving. If I was offered a speed awareness course, would the cost be double because I have 2 seperate offences?.

Thank you

Oh, and use paragraphs. Noone will read a wall of text.

Speeding is strict liability. In order to argue as you want to do you would need special reasons not to endorse. I doubt that would hit the barrier, and would have to be in court and by which time you have lost the chance of a course AND a fixed penalty, so while the points would likely be 3, your costs would be FAR higher - over £200 or so. per offence

Also, you got caught in BOTH directions. Surely you would only be going ONE way to get to your mums?

Finally, for a speed awareness course you only get ONE for ONE offence. So you would most usually be offered a course for one, and a CoFP for the other. SO total cost around £200 and 3 points on licence
You COULD return both at the same time, enclosing a COVER LETTER asking the police to use their discretion as they were on the same day at x time and only y minutes apart. Do it politely. Dont try to pretend youre not at fault and entirely accepting that you are at fault.
  • The reason I got caught in BOTH directions was because I use the same road leaving my mums as I do going to my mums
