Countertop dishwashers

hi there thinking of buying one of these for my daughter for Christmas to put in her rented flat.

Does anyone have any personal experience of them please?

Are they more trouble than they are worth? She enjoys cooking from scratch so uses pots and pans, not just a plate for microwave meals.

Many thanks

Only if there is no room to install a full size or slimline slot-in dishwasher.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I have one in my rented flat that I managed to slot into an empty cupboard. I absolutely love it - it is perfect for one/two people! I've had mine for nearly two years now and never had an ounce of trouble with it. I only use half a dishwasher tablet in it for every wash as it is small so it is cheap to run as well.

I have the ESSENTIALS Compact Dishwasher from Curry's (currently £170 and cashback available via Quidco).

Although the drain can often go into the kitchen sink, you need to think how water will be supplied to it if it is on the countertop.

Tap connecters are a faff, and making a hole in the worktop for the water supply to go through is generally not a good idea. :(

I'm with macman - see if there is a way of fitting a full-size or slimline model first. If necessary, ask the LL if they are willing to allow you to remove (and store) a cupboard under the worktop on the strict understanding you will replace it back to exactly how it was at the end of the tenancy.

thanks for all the comments so far. There is no room to install even a slimline one and don't think for one minute she would be allowed to install one if there was. (she was not allowed to dispose of a broken ironing board when she moved in for some reason!)

Luck of the irish - that sounds ideal but it would probably have to sit next to the sink on the worktop. I wondered how the water would get into the machine (I assume it drains out directly into the sink or does it need some sort of plumbing?)

Eachpenny - thanks for that - I have been reading of people's problems finding the correct tap connection. I can't think offhand what sort of tap she has but pretty sure it's a mixer tap.

If I bought the one mentioned above and paid for Currys installation would they cover all that sort of thing as it might be worth the money!

Will there be enough workspace left in the kitchen when you've got this dishwasher in?

No, if you pay for installation they will only deal with straightforward stuff. If there is anything complicated at all required they will just run away.

I had a table top dishwasher from Bosch. It lasted 10 years and worked really well.
The only major downside was the noise, I don't know if it was just mine or if they all end up making a racket.

You can fit quite a lot into them but somethings you have to be careful what you buy. For example my vegetable cutting boards and baking trays, I had to make sure I bought ones that would fit in the machine as a lot wouldn't fit.

Luckily I now have a full sized one, but if I didn't have room for one I would definitely buy another table top one.

The waste pipe can be placed in the sink but it's the same size as a washing machine pipe, so you can fit a washing machine inlet on the sink waste pipe, or other areas using adapters bought from screwfix.

The water inlet pipe is standard as well, so you can buy a Y adapter and connect it to the same water supply as the washing machine, if they are within distance. Many diswashers can be connected to the hot water supply instead of the cold. If you look behin the washing machine you might find there is an unused hot water supply as most washing machines no-longer use them

I had a Bosch one as well and I loved it

We did drill through the work top as it was our own home. Only trouble with that was I had to then include it with the sale of the house - or buy a new work top

We bought a counter top dishwasher and plumbed it in in the cupboard under the sink. It was a perfect fit. If you're going to do this make sure you get one with buttons at the top rather than the bottom!
