How to change a website.

Hi all,
Many years ago when on the sick I built a web site. Its used for my plumbing business and it hasnt been updated in years and now the phone numbers need changing .
It was build using serif webplus 6 on my old PC . I have since installed this on my laptop and cannot open the file of my saved website. Not sure if the file is corrupt or if web plus 6 will not work on vista machine.

So how do I make changes to my site without buying web plus 10 ( even then assuming the saved file is ok ) . I dont want to start again from scratch but if I have to what program do people use nowadays?
Can I somehow save my old site ( by visiting it with IE) and make changes with another program? I think I have front page with office xp but have no idea how to use it .

Thanks

Mark

  • you could try downloading a demo of dreamweaver and loading the html files into it.. it does a good job on most sites made with other editors
  • If it's just phone numbers or text you want to change, use Notepad to edit the html and then an ftp program (e.g http://www.smartftp.com/) to upload the modified files. You'll need to know your web host's login details.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Chippy I know my login details but just need a little more help please.
How do I "download" my web site? I dont have a working copy of the one I uploaded.

Assuming I can download my website , changing the phone number is the easy bit , but then do I upload a notepad file using smart?

EDIT , think I could file> view source and then edit that in notepad??

All I need to know now is how to upload a notepad file....Im off to play .
    Thanks
Sorry to ask silly questions but the program that I used to build the site then saved the site as a file which was uploaded with a built in FTP.

you can get your website files with an ftp program. There are some free ones available. You log in via the ftp and then just download all your files. If you only want to change some, just download those pages although its probably a good idea to download the lot incase you want to put your website up on another web providers space:)
An FTP prog makes it super simple to upload the site again later.
I think you just save your notepad file as html and it recognises as a web page.
Isnt front page a web editor?
  • How about you post your url and tell us what changes you want to make.. we might be able to advise

By using an ftp program. The files for your web site will probably be in a special folder on the ftp server, e.g. public_html. With SmartFTP you can download them by select all the files and then dragging and dropping to a Windows Explorer window, e.g. a folder in My Documents.

No, that views the source on the remote server. It's better to download the whole web site to your computer and then use Notepad to edit the .html/.htm etc. pages as required and then upload the changed pages using the same drag and drop method.

I think in front page you click on the picture and choose picture properties. Then click alignment so you can decide where it comes in relation to text.Wrapping will govern how lettering wraps round the pic.You can also drag and drop to swap the order of pics on a page. HTH
