BoilerMate hot water tank system - Any good??

Our brand spanky new house has one of the aforementioned systems installed. Advice is to leave boiler turned right up and let the BoilerMate control it to be most efficient. Anyone have experience of these systems, and how good/bad/efficient/inefficient/cheap/expensive to run ???

Sorry no personal contact with these but, this thread confirms my thoughts.http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=86965

Most likely the reason they fitted them is that you don't need to employ someone with a G3 cert. as it's not classed as unvented. In other words, cost.

  • I work on this type of equiptment regularly, and although they may appear to be complex, like most things they are not rocket science and are very easy once you understand them.

Boilermates are manufactured by Gledhill Water Storage Ltd, and the system is very good, giving mains pressured hot water without the need for a high output boiler.

They are efficient, and yes, you do need to keep your boiler thermostat turned up to maximum for it to work correctly and efficiently.

The reason for this is that the Boilermate is a thermal storage unit and has to achieve a temperature of 73deg C before it shuts off. If your boiler thermostat is turned down, the Boilermate will not reach this temperature and will continue to tell the boiler to fire up, resulting in wasted fuel consumption (both gas and electricity) without any benefit.
In addition to this, the Boilermate must reach a temperature of 60deg C before it will allow any heat to the radiators.

There is no service requirement for the Boilermate, but the gas boiler does require an annual service.
You should have years of trouble free hot water from it, with the most common cause of breakdown being a simple temperature probe that fails once in a blue moon.
