Upgrade to SSD or new Laptop

How is it going? Will you run a clean install?

I've had to do a clean install as my laptop won't recognise the external HDD for some reason. Used my caddy on a desktop and it works fine. It powers up on the laptop but no matter what I've tried the laptop doesn't recognise it.
Anyway the install went ok from a USB stick and I managed to extract the key using a free download as I had the free upgrade from WIN7.
Didn't really have chance to test it as I haven't re installed everything yet but first impressions seem to be good.
I'll update when I've sorted everything
  • For me, you don't need extra laptop. If you are okay with hdd or ssd then please don't buy new laptop.
  • My father's old laptop has the same chip you state. I put in an SSD and rebuilt. It does now boot up quicker and so forth, but the fact the chip is so out of date, it'll never be "good" again. Depends what you use it for I guess. Still, good luck!
    Friendly greeting!

My MacBook pro is a mid 2012. I7 Chip (forget which generation, but it's obviously old now) and had 16GB of RAM, but booting was still slow.

To my shame, I bought an SSD but didn't install it for about 15 months. The difference was incredible.

As a computer it'll be no good for doing more intensive things, the lack of processing means newer games and 3d modelling are probably a stretch too far. But for web browsing, Office and messing around with DAWS it still has plenty left to offer.

It has made a massive difference. It boots substantially quicker and programs open immediately whereas there was definitely a lag before.
Stll can't see my old hdd when connected to USB but I had that issue before and suspect it's the upgrade to Win 10 that caused it (even though I can see it in device manager)

Once Windows 10 has been installed and activated once you no longer need to enter a product key if you do a re-install, it'll automatically reactivate online using previously stored activation information based on the computer's hardware.

Is the old HDD in a USB 3.0 caddy?

It's in a USB 2 caddy but I tried it anyway but unfortunately it didn't work.

Does your caddy come with a 'Y' cable with an extra plug for auxiliary power?
How is the drive shown in Disk Management?

Yes it does. It powers up with and without the external power source.
It works fine in a desktop without the power source.

It shows up in device manager as WD25 00BEVS-75USTO USB device

I've tried re installing drivers and followed everything I can find without success so far
