Shed Insurance (not at my home address)

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with insuring your own shed, that isn't on your house land?

Basically my shed lives on my father in laws property which is across the road from my house, so it is at a different address. Which ultimately means that it isn't covered by my house insurance.

Now in brief, we have had an agreement drawn up by solicitors which states that whilst my wife and I own and live at our address then we are free to have the use of a portion of land for our shed and use of a parking space on the land.

If the advice is to move the shed onto our land then this could pose a problem, as we have a very small postage stamp of land round the back, which is shared between us and our neighbours (in days gone by, this was known as communal drying land)

Thanks, so far I've had no luck trying to explain this to the professionals in insurance. I do appreciate its a rather strange setup, but nonetheless its what I'm currently stuck with.

It's sounds as if you are overcomplicating things.
Why not just gift it to your father in law and then it belongs to him and will be covered by his insurance but he lets you use it?
Or if it really has to be yours he changes the title deeds so you own the land?
  • Thanks Pramsay13, you are probably right. I'm also not very clued up on insurance to be fair.

The title deeds have included us as joint owners of that land, thats my basic understanding. I'll have to reread the overly complicated literature. to get a better idea. I don't believ I can do this all on my home insurance, since the address is different. So I'm guessing i'd have to take out some other cover. PS its not just a shed with a lawnmower, spade and a rake in. It has a few things in that I'd like covered.

Write a 'contract' making your father in law responsible for insuring your shed. It'll then be covered under his policy as long as he's got cover for sheds on his policy.

Maybe try a broker or a specialist insurer such as NFU mutual and explain exactly what you are needing.

You might be able to insure these items as insured somewhere other than your home address.
