Work dilemma

Hi all
I apologise if this is not the right place to post this but I have a bit of a dilemma at work and need the opinion of others.
Just a little bit of background info to get started.
I have been at this place of work for 2.5 years I keep my head down do my work and go home, my supervisor and manager have both been with the company for a long time 12-15 years. We all get on very well we have disagreements obviously but nothing that has ever affected our working relationships, in fact the manager has been fantastic to me since I started.
For the last few months I have been feeling that I am ready for a more senior role so have been convinced that I will have to leave my current job due to the fact that the 2 guys senior to me in my department have been there for so long. The last 6 months I have taken on more knowledge and can now do the work for all the accounts that my company handles, the only other person who can do this is the manager.
However also during the same 6 month period my manager has been making error after error and the branch manager is not very happy with his performance or attitude. My manager recently went on holiday and I basically had to do all of his work as well as my own and it has been noticed that even with the extra work load mistakes went down to a bare minimum.
Now like I said I do my work and go home I'm not a brown noser or a trouble maker and I would never try to make people look bad I was just simply doing what I had to do to earn money for my family. My manager said to me that he thought they want me to do his job and if asked I should take it and that he does not care. I have also been told this by a few other people, and the branch manager has asked me to see him on Monday morning.
My dilemma is that if this does in fact come to fruition do I accept the job?
Like I said I have a family of 4 children with my eldest 2 having being diagnosed with autism and adhd so the extra money would be much needed as it's an extra £8000 a year.
The thing is would I be a complete !!!!!!! to take it as my manager has been nothing but amazing to me and I do genuinely like the guy.
On the other hand he says he wants to leave anyway and my other supervisor said he doesn't want it if it's offered to him.( also he only takes care of 1 customer and refuses to help on any others)
Sorry for the long post but I could really do with a bit of advice on this.

I don't know anything about the sort of job you have, but there are 2 men who are happy to walk away & let you have it! Unless both of them are close to retirement & just can't be a**** then they know something you don't. Personally I think they are both after a redundancy payout at best.0

You have to be a bit cut-throat to an extent. There are only finite positions like this and you do have to take the chances if you want to get on.
I think the big difference is when you actively pull someone down so that you can rise up. So if you were, for example, undermining your boss to make them look bad and lose their job then it would be morally questionable (but some people are like that). But it sounds like you are just being competitive and facing little opposition. That's sometimes a bit uncommon too so enjoy it (and maybe have a think about *why* the others don't like it, as there may be hidden elements to the role).
Aside from that, it is your life so do what you want0 -
If you get on with the one above ask them why they don't like the job.
If boss used to be OK with few mistakes and the rise in mistakes are new WHY?
Has the job changed got harder or is it down to a can't be bothered attitude/given up or something else.
How long was the acting up period, did you get involved in other higher stuff as well.
Do you get included in more manger stuff meeting/planning etc.
You can(need to) assess if the job will grow and become more demanding than a do the job and go home which could impact work/life balance.0 -
If it's offered to you, and if you want to do it, then go for it. The employer is just that, an employer. It seems three others are happy to let you go for it, but even if they aren't, that really is the employers problem. Your aren't doing anything wrong by taking a job that you want!0

Yes, if you are offered a job you would like, I think you should accept it.
It is up to the employer to decide who they want in a particular position.
If the supervisor wants to be treated a certain way because he has been there >10 years, that is an issue between him and the employer - not an issue with you.0 -

Except it's not a redundancy situation because the job role is still there.
If everyone is happy for you to take it, and you are happy to accept it, then why not?
But unless your manager has another job to go to then what are they planning to do with him?
Do you know if his change in demeanour is due to work, or personal circumstances impacting on work as he does sound unhappy.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

You should look out for yourself.
You've put the effort in, you should reap the rewards with the extra pay and responsibilities that come with it to improve the company.
If the shoe was on the other foot, that other person would be thinking of themselves also.0 -
If you go into this meeting tomorrow and are advised that it has already been decided that your boss won't be staying in his role - perhaps he's already resigned, or agreed to move into a different role - and you're offered his job, is there any reason why you might not take it?
It sounds like your only reason for not doing so is that you might feel bad about playing a part in him being moved on - and this becomes irrelevant if the decision has already been made.0 -

There might be other reasons why the meeting has been called. I just wanted to post to remind you of something which I often tend to forget.
If they throw you a curve ball during the meeting, and suggest something that you are not expecting, remember that there is no law written in stone which says you have to make a decision in the meeting. The thing I tend to forget is that you have the option to say 'this is a serious decision and I think the best thing for me to do is to take it away and thing about it. I think I will need at least x days/a week. When would you like to reconvene to discuss this further?'
They may not go for it. But this should buy you time and also look like a thoughtful adult responding to an unexpected suggestion.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
