Is there a website I can use to check my desktop to see what upgrades I could do to make it a decent pc again, or if its just better to get a new one? Its about 5 years old, I've already upgraded the memory.

Install an ssd if you haven't already done so.
How much ram have you got at the moment?0 -
An SSD will certainly make it start faster - but what CPU does the PC have, and what do you use the PC for? Is it Windows 10?0

I just put in 2 x 512mb ddr, it was what MrMemory suggested about 2 years ago, but I stopped using it about then when I got a laptop, but now I'd like to get it running again.0

I know it needs a new graphics card, how do I( find a compatible one?0

How about you tell us what you have now and we can look it up? What is your computer brand and model number?0

Windows is the problem, use Ubuntu insteadDo you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

sounds old if the recommended memory upgrade was only 1GB. It might not be worth spending money on.
download cpu-z from here, on page download (part way down page on left hand side -purple box 'setup english 32 and 64 bit version' )and install this will give you all the information we need to ask about your system.0 -
try speccy, the free one. it will probably tell you more than you wish to know.
At 5 years old, the most bang for your buck is SSD. A better graphics card and cpu upgrade could be beneficial, but often not by much.
Take a roman chariot and strap on a jet engine, the chariot will be faster - if it can hold the weight, but if you want real speed you have to buy a new plane0 -
Maybe you need to let us know, what is the usage purpose of your desktop? (Gaming, Internet Surfing, Video watching, Document editing, ...) Then, we can suggest accordingly. As, different usage purpose does have different hardware requirements.0
