Help Bailiffs Coming

I moved in march and moved to a different council,( i get I.B and D.L.A. I have schitzophrenia and severe clinical depression) I was getting full housing benefit and council tax. and when i moved into the flat i am in now this council told me at first i was on full benefits, then after about 3 months the housing association told me i was in debt with my rent. I phoned the housing benefit office and they told me i had to pay money towards rent and council tax, and wanted the money i owed them. So now i am having to pay the debt back to them for C TAX and to the housing !!! for rent. Then 2 months ago i got a bill from my old council saying i owe £1,700 rent and £470 council tax, i was living there 11 months. I sent them an offer of paying £5 a week off the debt and they said it wasnt enough. I went to M.I.N.D for help and they said leave it with them and they would sort it out, they didnt and the council went to court and got an order out aganst me, So i just couldnt cope anymore and took an overdose on 27th october. while i was in hospital someone from M.I.N.D came to see me and said they would help me again. Nobody got in touch and i cant get through to them on the phone. Now today i got a letter from a bailiff dated 25th october saying tey are coming to remove goods to pay the bill! I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO

  • Make sure your windows and doors are locked and the bailiffs can't get in, firstly! For Council Tax debts, they can't force entry (unless you have let them in before) but can get in through an open window, unlocked door.

Second of all, can you get into a CAB at all? Get some help from them with your benefits and the Council Tax debt.

    Hi

I'm really sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time. At the top of the page there is information about free debt counciling who can help you deal with this situation.

If you are feeling up to it call the council and explain recent events they maybe able to help. It sounds like your benefits have gone completly wrong.
  • Hi there - I'm afraid I really don't have much experience on this but I just wanted to show my support to you. Have you asked your doctor if they can step in and help at all? Send a letter to the council or anything? If you're receving full housing benefit I don't understand how you can be expected to pay anything toward your house / C Tax. I take it you're not working?

Please please whatever you do don't go down the overdose route again life really is worth more than giving up on over money xx

I'm sure people with far more info on all of this will be along soon to advise....grab a cuppa and sit tight :grouphug:
  • Do you have a social worker or someone at the council who deals with your finances (trustee) or a community psychiatic nurse? You need to get yourself some help in managing things as from your post its clear that you really are struggling. Are you taking medication to keep your mental health problems at bay and if so are you keeping up with tablets? Please get some help to deal with things; you're entitled to it & there is no shame in it! Keep posting & big hugs...just get help dealing with this - it can be sorted but you needhelp to work through it all - its confusing at the best of times!

  • my trouble is, the more depressed i get the more i sleep and cant get round to doing things. Its just a vicous cicle
  • Are you a council tenant? And does your council have Tenancy Support Officers? If they do, these people can usually help you get in touch with other organisations and just give you a bit of support.

I'm sure it is - the point is there are people out there that are supposed to be helping you. Try your hardest tomorrow to get in touch with your Doctor at least and see if he / she can help - also am sure something has gone wrong with your benefits so perhaps try ringing the housing assoc / council again and see if they can explain it to you.

Do you have any family nearby that can maybe do the above for you?
  • sorry circle! no its housing association
