I wonder if you can get some kind of radio controlled vibrator which he could wear on his collar. You could use that alongside other training so that you can get his attention if he strays out of sight/hearing range when out and about.
If such a device doesn't exist then it should.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

You can buy vibrating collars to aid training deaf dogs (not to be confused with e-collars which are a whole different kettle of fish!)

Thought I'd show you the foolish beast in all his glory!

It's too simple to just sit on a roomy mat.......much better to get yourself in as small a space as possible.....even better when you fall asleep and roll off the edge! Then you get up and get to do it all over again.
This table is where the youngest does homework....pup decided he was gonna be as close as possible which is how he first got this idea in his head! He's not allowed on the couch or other furniture btw.

It's also loads of fun when you get to play in the muck. Apparently!
And then when you're just plain tuckered out........it's good to cuddle with a friend. (Big sap!)
He seemed to have a bit of a newspaper fetish for a while and opted to lie on it to sleep but that's worn off now and he quite likes his bed and vetbed now.

Ive just read through this thread and i am so glad you kept your pup and he is gorgeous! ... We bought a choccie lab back on August and hes now 6 months .... He does smell doggy but not overly! we feed him on burns i have to say though we use a couple of plug ins and have wooden floors so i tend to mop most days but i think the "smell" goes with the territory!
Also without slating vets i just wanna say dont take everything they say as 100% i.e if they recomend food (they get a cut) ... Go with your instincts! Our lab was very unresponsive when we first got him and slept the clock round, i think it was all part of the settling in process.
training is hard enough with a dog that can hear! ... but i remember watching a programme in the morning from battersea and they trained a deaf dog using a flag! ... it was amazing to watch! ... they waved the flag the dog came running! i think the key though is repatition over and over ! and treats cos we all know that Labs learn through their tummys! l0l .... Liver and garlic cake is great as is tuna cake but only keep the really yummy treats for training and maybe he'll work extra hard to get them! ....
also just a quickky but have you tried ringing any "normal" training classes for advice? .. i take Bosun to on locally but we still teach hand movements without voice for sit, wait and down! .... maybe worth a try!

Right now my biggest concern is the smell! He smells of dog and now so does my house! I hoover/clean all the time but it still smells.
His lovely soft bed won't help as it's likely to absorb the oil from his coat, which holds the doggy smell.
When the time comes to upgrade his bed (not long before he needs a bigger one!!) I strongly suggest you consider a Kudos Mattress as they are less absorbant and can be hosed down - daily, if you're so inclined
You can couple this with a plastic, kidney shaped dog bed like this
With three dogs, all beds and mattresses go outside first thing in the morning to be hosed down and allowed to dry. Ours (Springer, Lab & Rottador) no longer have any soft, fleecy blankets etc as I find they simply hold the smell!
One final thing ... working dogs (of which the Lab is one) is aren't terribly suited to warm, centrally-heated houses. In particular, try and let the dog sleep in an unheated room e.g. utility room, even if you have to turn off the radiator overnight. And let out for much of the day, where he will be much more comfortable.
