please help

i am not looking for sympathy just some help, basically my credit raiting has been brill. I moved in with my sister and we rented a house all in my name, she ran up 19 thousand worth of debt, whilst living there i applied for a virgin card still have it with 1500. This is provided by mbma, I have applied for card after card but keep getting turned down, i pay 100 off my card 36.99 of this is interest and 6.99 for my equifax report {that i dont know how to cancel and is pointless) . My problem is if i try to prove that all the debt at my old house is not mine i am worried that as it was rented in my name i will be liable for it also my sister had the same last name and initial so could have ran up debt in my name. please help the interest is crippling me i cant see a way out and want to pay the card off without a huge chunk of it going on interest:confused:

It seems to cancel equifax, you need to login and then use the contact us link.
They don't make it easy do they!!

If there is any debt on your report that you don't think is yours, contact that organisation and explain the situation. If they insist the debt is yours, ask them for a copy of the CCA (Consumer credit agreement). There are templates available on the board for this if they refuse.

You are only liable for debts that you signed for (with a CCA). If they cannot prove the debt is yours, they cannot have it against your name. Most places would be reasonable about wanting something like this sorted out as it will mean they will definately get their money. I had a similar problem as my father and i are both George. I was told when they wanted to look over my accounts to see if i was getting the best service that i'd need to close my account - i walked out the bank. Bloomin sales people :(

  • Your credit rating can be affected by debts of anybody that has a 'financial link' with you. As it seems your sister doesn't, get copies of your credit report and correct anything that's not right.

Sorry - missed last part. Once you get confirmation (this should be on your credit report - showing only your accounts unless you have a joint account with your sister) that you only have the Virgin Card debt, as long as you haven't had more than 2 credit checks in about 3 months (also on your report) then you should hopefully be able to get another CC with a 0% interest promotion period. If possible, do a balance transfer from your new card to the virgin one.
Also check that you are not trying to transfer to the same card provider. This site should help

  • i have had at last count 15 credit card applications checked. out of desperation to avoid the charges, i have checked my credit report there is to missed payments which are mobile !!!! ups the rest are applications for cc. when mbma called me about my virgin card they were kind enought to tell me that the debt was on our old house, they asked me my sisters date of birth etc, and because i was there and my name is linked with the address i think thats why i cant get cc,s i dont want to research the debts cause as we shared the same name i think she may have forged things in my name and i may end up paing them.

All those applications for credit are probably throwing a spanner in the works too!

I would go mad and report it as a fraud if you think she has been forging stuff!

Im paranoid that my brother will do the same too as he is dodgy (by his own addmision)

with regards to the ccard applications, you need to stop applying for a least 4-6 months, then the old credit searches will drop off your credit history.

you need to contact equifax regarding cancelling the automatic payment.
in future its cheaper to send request with £2/3 payment to cover copy of credit file.

have you checked out the other 2 credit reference companies... ie experian and (cant think of it, it begins with C)
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Just because you live at the same address as someone - your accounts shouldn't be linked. If they are, then the bank has screwed up. Doesn't matter if you share the same name - as i said, my father and i have the same firstname and surname. I have 2 middle names while he has none. The bank once sent his mortgage details along with my bank statement and he went balistic (ex bank manager).

If there are any accounts on your credit history that you did not open and do not belong to you - notify them NOW!!

Also, as suggested, no more application for 6 months. Usually 2 within 3 months is acceptable. 15 and no-one is even going to think about offering vredit.

I take it you have not been in contact with your sister? If she has been forging something or even applying for something in your name - that is fraud, and as you have found out can land you in serious financial difficulty.

Are there accounts on your credit history that aren't yours?

  • no but i am assuming they are going off my previous address, the other thing is i can do it in dawber which ws my married name but i have no credit history. All my virgin credit card payments are up to date my 2 mob ones are on it and the acc applications . could my late mobile payments have made a difference to it. When mbma called me they said they had been in touch with equefax and that there was stuff on it i am scared to look

You need to take a deep breath and just do it.
The longer you leave it the harder it could be to deal with.

What if your sister has done nothing wrong, other than get into debt, and the bank has put it on your account rather than hers? No problem for you - you just need to get the bank to change it. It might be that simple a problem. There's only one way to find out.

The first thing you need to do is log into equifax.
Have a look at all the accounts listed and see if there is anything on your file you were not aware of.
Make sure that your address, date of birth etc are all correct
If there is nothing there that doesn't look right, go to the contact us section and get the customer service details so you can cancel your equifax membership.

Alot of banks are cutting down on the amount of credit they give out right now. It may be that your late payments influenced the decision as to whether you would get credit or not.
Also after you had a couple of credit checks on your history, this would warn others that you were looking for credit quite often and possibly think of you as high risk. A credit check is only seen on your record for 6 months, so after this time these checks should not influence any credit decision.

There may be nothing to worry about. It may be a simple case of the first banks you contacted are restricting who they give credit to and the others saw you recently had a credit check done and refused you out of hand.

Edit: Also i would suggest checking your credit report on Experian (free if you cancel within 30 days). Just incase there is some disparity.
