Receiving payment on closing accounts

Maybe I am just paranoid but I am begining to notice a pattern emerging! I have been busy moneysaving and changing accounts (savings and current accounts). Over the last few months I have written to my banks in order to close the accounts. On each occasion I have requested a bank transfer of the funds and provided details. I have found that the banks have all ignored my request and sent a settlement cheque instead. Twice with an accompanying letter that the 'system was not working' so they had to send a cheque. I now have to find time to take my cheque down to the bank (I am not going to post cheques for large sums). All of this means that my account is closed and earning no interest but my funds won't be cleared for several days......very annoying!!

whilst I am ranting..why is it that I can open any account on line or on telephone banking but in order to close an account I am told that 'I must visit my branch'........hmmmmmm.

Tried closing an A&L current account in a branch?
It seems to me to actually get confirmation of closure - rather than just collecting the balance by way of cash or cheque - you need to phone and be able to remember your phone PIN even if you never used the phone service so hadn't bothered to memorise the phone PIN. The Customer Service staff can't do it - well not in my nearest branch any way.
