Cheque sent in error

Hi,
Earlier this year I was driven into by another driver. A claim was made to my insurance company for the damages to my vehicle and because I provided them with sufficient information they agreed to waive the £300 excess.
2 months after the accident I received a letter from my insurance company enclosing a check for £300 from the third party insurers 'represents my excess'. I cashed the cheque because it was sent to me by my own insurer (signed by the third party insurer) and that I was entitle to it.
Today I received a letter from my insurer saying that this cheque was in fact sent to me in error and that the third party insurers made a mistake by making the cheque payable to me and not them.
What should I do?
PS - I have no problem paying them money back, but not until I receive the settlement figure form the insurance claim.

You didn't pay your excess and had no right to cash the cheque and you should give the money back.0

Who to? My own insurance company? Or the third party?
The cheque was made payable to me not my insurer? Is my insurer trying to pull a fast one? Cost of repairs totalled around £1000, which will be reclaimed from the third part insurers?0 -
Either. The third party insurer won't pay it again so your insurance company won't be reimbursed in full if you don't return it.
You could ask you're insurer who to send it to when you're chasing up your claim settlement.
The fact it was payable to you is irrelevant. You weren't entitled to it.
Not repaying it would be a damned silly way of incurring an 'at fault' claim on your policy.0 -
I have no problems in paying them back, only seen the letter when I came home this evening so will call them next week now (they are not open on weekends - customer service anyway).0

Op there are two separate things here,
your own settlement and the cheque paid out in error
Pay up as you said or expect a small claims court"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

Although I will be paying the money back, it would be interesting to know what the outcome would have been based on the initial letter I had off them enclosing the third party cheque.
It seems that a its all too common that insurance companies dont know exactly what they are doing.0 -

People make mistakes...don't mess around and just return the money before this bites you on the arse.0 -
I too recieved a cheque from to cover my excess even though it was waived earlier this year. I phoned the company, they said 'thank you very much' and I destroyed the cheque.
I didn't pay it out so I can't get it reimbursed!0
