Lidl do have dates on their fruit and veg but it isn't easy to check. They do it by week number through the year. A good store will rotate the stock but some aren't as conscientious. I find their veg very good on the whole but apart from apples and bananas don't tend to buy the fruit. But then I usually buy my fruit at M & S because the flavour is so much better than all the other supermarkets (it's expensive but doesn't get wasted).

I loved Aldi's stuff, yes you might find a few manky packs of fruit or veg in with the others but they don't have as many staff doing stock rotation as larger supermarkets so they don't get hoiked out as quick. We stopped shopping there because of their lack of gluten free stuff and moved over to Lidl, their gluten free range is great. Our local store always has pasta/spaghetti, oats, biscuits, bread, meat products available. Their fresh stuff is very similar to Aldi, a bit hit and miss sometimes but on the whole I can get what I need.

  • To be honest, I have never held much affection for Aldi's fruit & veg - all prepacked, with mouldy/bruised ones in the packaging, not much of a selection and not actually that cheap in comparison to other places. To be honest, I find T-who-must-not-be-named is actually better on the cheap stuff

I can only judge by my Lidl, no Aldi near.
Generally I find it OK for fruit & veg, but I do think it is very dependant upon management

I've seen the manager going round and chucking F & V out but sometimes I find the tomatoes are hit & miss, and in winter I either do not buy them or if I must have a tomato I get them where I can poke them about

    Hi Ollie
I prefer prepacked as you don't know if people have touched say apples or tomatoes and not washed their hands. Yuck !
    .

How on earth do think they are picked?

I don't often shop in Aldi but when I did the fruit and salad type things really didn't last for very long. I only bought enough to last the week.

I stopped using Aldi for that reason, as I was going to two shops and also this particular store sometimes stocked things and sometimes didn't.

Now I use either Tesco or Asda, both are equal distance from me.

I don't have a lidl near me so can't comment on them.
  • Of late I've found them both better than our MrT, which hasn't had grapefruit in for weeks, and rarely seems to stock English apples, whereas they have done.

Lidl - I don't shop there as the nearest store is several miles away from me.

Aldi - Fruit and veg is very hit and miss. It's usually as case of pot luck as to what it will cook/taste like.
  • It might be where you are. When I lived in London Aldi's fruit and veg was fine, but in the north west it's inedible. I don't say that lightly but every time I've tried it (Aldi is closest to my house) I've been seriously disappointed and never seem to learn.
