Underpaid Child Tax Credits

I have four children, all four I received child tax credits however when my eldest child turned 16 I didn't know I had to tell them that she was still in education. Therefore I missed out on 2 years of child tax credits. After her my eldest son stayed in education and now is in his second year. I had missed one year of his child tax credits also. Now my third child is staying in education I realised I had to let HMRC know that if my over 16 children stayed in education. I notified them through the online service and they have began paying for my eldest son's 2nd year and 3rd child's child tax credits.

Is it possible to get my 3 years worth of missed child tax credit payments? (2 Years for my daughter who is now in University and 1 year for my son who is in his 2nd year of approved education).

Thanks for any help.

  • No, tax credits can only be backdated 3 months. It was your responsibility to let them know and you failed to do so.

did you notify child benefit or did that stop also?
  • No for some reason that stayed the same.

Usually this also stops unless you notify them. Sometimes they share information but this doesn't always happen.
  • I done a bit more research. Child benefit do not share information with tax credit department. Also found out that the backdate is not possible as i did not meet the requirements/criteria. This means I lost out on a whopping £7000.

They are both HMRC and they can and do share information, they have with all 3 of my children when i've updated the information when they've continued their full time education. However, i've always rang both to make 100% sure.

Agree with this - when I rang Tax Credits to update them about my daughter's continuing education, they told the child benefit team for me.

The departments do share information but it is up to you to read your awards notices and notify any changes so I highly doubt any appeal for backdating would work
