Monthly direct debit after the statement due date

Probably a really daft question but am keen to avoid credit card costs and markers etc.

So my (Nationwide) credit card monthly balance is due for payment on the 14th. As this is a Sunday presumably they'll call this (from a HBOS current account) on Monday - i.e. after the due date.

Will I avoid costs etc?

Thanks in advance.

Simply no, you have nothing to worry about if you have set up a DD

Your Nationwide credit card statement should say the date on which the direct debit will be collected. In any case, it is their responsibility to collect the DD and as long as the funds are available in your HBOS account the payment will be collected on time.

I had exactly this scenario a few months ago.

The money disappeared from my current account on the monday following the weekend, but didn't show up on the credit card account until the tuesday. When it did show up, the transaction was dated as though it was received on the due date, so all was good :-)

My January payment was due on Sunday 28th January and the DD (from NatWest) was taken on Monday 29th. My credit card statement also showed the payment date as Monday 29th but there was certainly no suggesting of it being a late payment.
  • Many thanks all.

    Appreciated

If the credit card company have set up a direct debit then it will count as being on time. I tend not to use direct debits but some of mine used to say something like:-

The direct debit will be taken on, or shortly after 14/10/18
  • You will be fine if the payment is being taken from your account by direct debit - the onus is on Nationwide to pull the money and make sure it gets applied to your account by the due date.

If you make payments by card/transfer then this is another story - most credit cards will usually take 2 business days to process the incoming payment from when you sent it. If you sent it on the Thursday, it wouldn't arrive and be credited until the Monday (ie. after the due date) so for your payment due Sunday, it really needs to arrive by Friday as most banks won't process payments on a weekend.
