I'd run away from E&L at full speed, they are dreadful. I took out a policy with them when I first bought my dog (then a puppy) after a hunt round price comparison sites and went for a policy with a £5k a year cover.

However when something did happen (dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at approx 1yr) and I went to claim around £500, not only did I have to pay upfront (which is not the case with a lot of pet insurers) but it took months and a lot of hassling to get the money back. When I did finally get a cheque, it came along with a nice little letter which said they would no longer cover my dog for anything hip related - despite the fact that my claim was well below my cover limit.

I was then left left paying around £29 a month for a policy which would no longer pay out for the problem my dog had. Since then I've had to pay for all his medication, plus another £400 or so in follow-up appointments where x-rays were involved myself. I'm now left with the issue that I either stay with this bunch and not get cover for the one thing my dog needs, or I move to another insurer who also won't cover it as it'll then be a pre-existing condition.

  • Guess how hard it is to cancel the policy......The EandL cancellation team (A whole team for just cancellations?) phone number is 08449809117.

If they are busy or you can not get through use their "Quote" line number 08449809510 they may try to fob you off with calling the accts dept....Simply demand they cancel your acct with immediate effect. It worked for me......besides I had already cancelled my direct debits.

I have had to take out other pet insurance just incase my dog meets any E&L staff and give them a welcoming bite, wouldn't want to be without liability insurance etc......

I must admit that although they act like banks....The banks put up a much better fight.

  • We insured our cats with E&L. The premiums are relatively low, but two month on from paying a large vets bill, we haven't had a bean from them.
I guess you get what you pay for. We won't be using them again and I would recommend that everyone avoid them.
Previously we used Direct Line. They were just great - premiums are more expensive, but they always paid claims quickly, in full and with no quibbles.
  • I have just canceled a direct debit for 94p that I didn't ask for to Animal Society Ltd, I found all your letters on the forum and am now going to cancel my pet insurance with E & L.

I've just noticed on my account ANIMAL SOCIETY LTD FIRST DDR PAYMENT DDR 97p. Now i dont mind being charitable but i'd like to have a say in it, or at least realise i said it!! Am also with E&L and dont remember this in it but think i will look around for new cover asap. Has anyone had any problems after they cancelled the dd from animal society ltd? Also if you cancel E&L does the animal society dd get automatically cancelled - unlikely i know but still!!

    Thanks!

have just noticed three references to this charity on my bank statement. spoke to my bank directly and discussed with them how it was set up.

I was told that it was part of the electronic system that is used when you set up DD over the internet. TBF I don't recall using the internet to setup/cancel the DD for it.

I asked for some contact information they gave me the number 0870-742-3916, spookily enough when I dialled I was greeted by an answer phone message from E&L.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THE CHEEK OF THESE PEOPLE. THEY DON'T PAYOUT WHEN A VALID CLAIM IS APPLIED FOR AND WHEN YOU HAVE FINALLY HAD ENOUGH AND CANCEL THEY SET A DD TO FLEECE YOU SOME MORE!

    AVOID THESE CROOKS.

E&L Insurance = bad dog, dirty dog, get in your basket.

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

I am reporting these transgressions to my banks fraud department to investigate.

Arrgh the same has happened to me, I have pet insurance with E&L, last year they put the insurance up without letting me know, which I cancelled, and today they have taken money under the Animal Society for a lost and found service which I dont need as my pet is chipped. The amount they took was only 94p not a lot but it is the principle they said i set this up when i first took out the insurance I dont remember when I asked about the reminder of taking my money they said they run a paperless ervice they dont have too WHAT.

I will be taking my business elsewhere, does nayone know of any good pet insurance :-)
