Has Tonik Energy fitted anyone with a Smart Meter in the south east/Kent over the last 12months, I was told 8months ago they are in my area and would be around shortly . . . ., does anyone really save money with smart meters !?!?

A meter is a meter: it just records your energy use. Saving money is achieved in two ways: one, watching the £ sign increase on the In House Display encourages you to go around the house and turn things off, and, two, some suppliers now offer cheaper time of use tariffs.

My advice. Wait until next year, when all suppliers are required to fit the latest generation SMETS2 meter which are not supplier dependent: that is, you can switch.

PS there are other benefits from having a smart meter that recently departed Leccy ( of Gaz and Leccy fame) have failed to mention. For example, it’s teatime and you are trying to watch your favourite Soap. You put the oven on, place the IHD on a table between you and the TV, and you can tell when the oven has reached temperature when the usage indication falls on the IHD. :)

Dear me, we are scraping the barrel to find advantages here! Yes, I suppose so assuming there aren't other devices with a significant load that cut in and out such as an electric heater with a thermostat or an immersion heater etc.

I have also seen one EV user state that he uses the IHD to monitor whether his car is charging from PV solar or from the Grid. Sadly, what is happening in the Real World is worrying. I see that Citizens Advice Scotland is now reporting that an increasing number of homeowners, who have had smart meters fitted, are finding that their heating is not working:

Quote: Further, the first generation smart meters being installed at present don’t offer the same benefits as are anticipated from the second generation. With first generation meters there can be problems with switching supplier. We are also starting to see cases in the Citizens Advice network in Scotland of some systems of electric heating not working with first generation smart meters. This is a particular problem in Scotland given the relatively high number of consumers using electricity for heating. Unquote
