Fridge Freezer Repair

Hi,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
We've had our american style fridge freezer for 14 months now and 2 weeks ago it developed a loud squeaking noise in the freezer section. The fridge freezer is working and all my food is fine.
I booked an repair for £179! but was assured that if the engineer said it was a manufacturing fault i would be refunded. The engineer believed that all was needed was a 3 day defrost and i was refunded. turned it back on and the noise returned but freezer still working. Contacted Currys again and the response i got was "the engineer reported it was working to spec and let us know if it has any operational faults" i responded but haven't had a response yet.
The fridge freezer is in excellent condition and you would think it was new. It isn't anything we have done. to me its unfit for purpose, its quite loud and because my kitchen is attached to my living room quite disruptive. also my wife is sleeping with newborn downstairs and its not helping her sleep.
What are my rights in this situation? i don't believe it warrants a £179 (that i don't really have) spent on a item that is very well looked after and 2 months out of initial warranty.

You will need to prove its your claimed unfit for purpose . Get an independant enginners report then proceed against the vendor via Consumer Rights See stickies top of page .0

But then im paying for an independent engineer and surely that wont be cheap0

If an independent report states that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect then you contact the seller, send them a copy of the report and ask for a resolution (repair, exchange or refund, which can be a partial refund) and they should also cover the cost of the report.0 -
The purpose of a fridge/freezer is to refrigerate and freeze the contents as applicable. If it does that then it is fit for purpose ... unless there is a specification item which says how loudly/quietly it should do this.0

However, the only two moving parts in a fridge/freezer that could cause a squeaking noise are the compressor/motor and the fan and either of these failing would probably lead to the loss of all of the stored food if not noticed soon after they failed totally.
It's also possible (but unlikely) that if it's the motor bearing that is making the noise then this seizing up totally could present a fire risk.
As the noise has only recently started then it certainly sounds like something is faulty rather then simply a characteristic nose of the appliance.0 -
I agree entirely ... I was simply rebutting the "fit for purpose" comment. It's really "goods not conforming to contract" that the OP needs to focus on, of which "fit ffor purpose" is only 1 element.0

Unfortunately under CRA 2015, you have to prove the fault pre-existed-which means paying upfront for the report.
Too late now, but next time don't go to DSG, go to JL. They will price match and you will also get a 2 year warranty on all white goods. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
