Newbuilt - Switch energy supplier before registering with default one

Hello,

Just moved into a new-built and they told me that it's currently connected to E-On.
We are all apparently a terrible tariff, chosen by the developer, that is their default ongoing one that you can just switch from at any point.

I want to immediately switch suppliers but I haven't yet registered with E-on. Do I even have to register with E-On if I've been in this place for a few days?

I tried calling them yesterday and I was on hold for 30 minutes only to give me another number to call and submit meter readings in order to open an account.
Today and I am on hold for 45 minutes. I can't even submit meter readings and open an account. They seems absolutely atrocious to me.

So can I circumvent them somehow? I am afraid they'll try tactics to get me in a "better" tariff that I will be contractually bound to stay with them. Ideally I want to switch without dealing with them at all. But from what I understand, I need to have an account with them in order to be able to switch, or what will happen if I try to switch without an account?

Ironically, I can't open an account with them even if I really wanted to, because they don't pick up the phone.

No you need to register with them, as a new tenant in a house you are automatically on a deemed tariff with the current gas & electric supplier. As soon as you register with them, you can start a switch to either a completely new supplier or onto a better tariff with the existing supplier(s). If you try to sign up to a new supplier without registering, you will only cause problems for yourself.

Edit: It is also a good idea to take a photo of the gas and electric meters showing the readings as soon as you move in. Then you have proof of your opening readings and won't be billed for the previous tenants use, or in your case any electricity the house builders may have used.

    What is a Deemed tariff?

A Deemed Tariff is provided for under Schedule 6 of the Electricity Act 1989 and Schedule 2B of the Gas Act 1986.

It arises where a supplier already supplies electricity and/or gas to a property and there is no formal supply agreement in place with the customer. Typically, this occurs where a person moves into a property and has not agreed specific contractual terms with the current supplier, this ensures there is continuity of supply (i.e. the property remains on supply, even where the occupiers may change).

Take care. Builders talk in Plot numbers and suppliers use addresses. I have just moved into a new build and our plot number was 6 and address no 14. After some careful research, I found that our gas meter had been incorrectly entered onto the National Database as 6 (postal address). Between them, SP Networks and the builder had also managed to get the electricity meter serial numbers mixed up.

If you want to switch, you must switch using the information on the two National Databases, or get it sorted before you attempt to switch.

Hello nkomp18 and hope the move went well.

Already some excellent advice on here - thanks all. To confirm, as the existing supplier, we'll continue to supply until you've arranged a move away. To make sure all goes smoothly, you'll need to contact us so we can set up an account to cover usage from when you took over responsibility to the time the switch completes.

I know you've tried to do this and I'm sorry for the difficulties you've had phoning. We're aware this isn't good enough and are working to improve. Try the link wavelets has kindly posted - thanks wavelets. This will let you give us all the information we need without waiting on the phone. Alternatively, we've Home Moves advisors on our Live Chat and Social Media channels who will be happy to help. The photos mac.d mentions are another great idea - thanks mac.d.

We can set up the account quickly. You can stay on our standard tariff if you wish. There are no tie-ins with this tariff leaving you free to switch supplier at any time without penalty. There are other tariffs without exit fees that will save you a little whilst the move goes through. Check out our website for these. Changes of supply usually go through in about two and half weeks.

Hope this is useful nkomp18 and you've settled in to your new home. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

The default tariff will simply be Standard Variable, which, although the most expensive, has no exit fees. You'll only be on it for a few weeks if you register and start a switch immediately. Yes, you do have to register with the current supplier, otherwise you've no supplier to switch from-and because the existing supplier will need to bill you for your usage from the date of completion.

Sadly, life isn’t that simple. I have just been chatting to one of my new build neighbours and she has waited over 6 months for one of the Big 6 to set her new build energy account.
