i hate to break up a rant with some facts, but unis are not raking it in! i know this has been 'covered' on many other threads, but your tuition fee goes on things like library access, careers service, counselling service, sports facilities, campus security, building maintenance, admin support, IT support, computing facilities, software licenses........the issue is that higher education should be free for people entering from college education or below a certain age, the fact that most people got thier degree for free (if more then 13 years ago) only backs this argument further why should i get £30'000 of debt when you got yours for free or something meagre like £3000 of debt. saimple fact is the universities and govt are greedy pigs shovvling thier fat mouths full of my generations cash that thanks to you lot in the public sector and banks is virtually worthless anyway. so whilst people can wax lyrical about how its taxpayers cash, so what every child deserves an education but only those from wealthy, middle class backgrounds deserve a degree. why should i pay for an education when those in power got thiers for free. and dont get rude saying oh boo hoo i had to pay back £5k for the penthouse suite me and tarquin rented in mayfair.a single room in a uni run house costs £530 pcm, this is in the equivilent of a travelodge hotel style room, but half the size, with communal facilities. these 'flats' will house 6-8 thats over £4k pcm per flat straight to the uni, an average block might have 100 flats in it, thats £400'000 pcm per flat, where does my tuition fee go? not on keeping the flats to a £530 pcm standard thats for sure. not on offsetting public transport costs to the uni site, oh no. FACT unis are raking it in.
universities all over the country are on the verge of going under. government funding has been drastically cut and so fees will rise. if you have an issue, take it up with government, not with the unis - they need to cover costs.
who are 'you lot in the public sector' who are useless? the library assistant? the bin man? the teacher? the doctor? the job centre worker? the council staff delivering meels on wheels? the idea that the public sector is one lump is madness!
the introduction of fees (breaking a labour election pledge in case you don't remember back that far - plenty of us do - coming up with fees with no notice was not pleasant!) marked a massive change in higher education. there's no going back now (whatever anyone thinks about it!). it is a sad change to make, but if you improve access so that a much higher percentage of the population is going to uni, the money has to come from somewhere. there is far wider access to universities now than there ever was 40/50 years ago. then it really was only for a small percentage, largely from wealthier backgrounds.....
EDIT - sorry, can't help myself, it's THEIR not thier - i know it doesn't really matter, but there are plenty of people who would see basic spelling errors being made by current uni students and see that as an indication of dropping standards.......:happyhear0 -

Sorry, can't help myself, it's MEALS not meels - i know it doesn't really matter, but there are plenty of current uni students who would see basic spelling errors being made by people such as yourself as somewhat of a hypocrisy.0 -

You decided to drag up an almost three-month-old thread to say that?
It's 'I', not 'i'. We can all be pedants.0 -
Apologies. 'I' simply made the error of copy and pasting from the above quote.
I actually found great interest in what the thread was discussing as I too am looking to move away for a few years upon completion of my studies. That said, it angers me when people make assumptions that Uni standards are dropping based upon pathetic grammatical discrepancies on a forum. I pay a lot of money for my reputable course despite constantly being told that it will make little difference to my work prospects. Perhaps we need to encourage those who already have jobs to drop the ideology that all students are layabouts and we might get somewhere.0 -
hmm. fair comment on my typo but i wonder what type of person i am that makes students see 'people like me' particularly bad.....Sorry, can't help myself, it's MEALS not meels - i know it doesn't really matter, but there are plenty of current uni students who would see basic spelling errors being made by people such as yourself as somewhat of a hypocrisy.
i don't actually think all students are lazy and stupid, but as a general point, when they write posts with basic errors (be they factual, grammatical or spelling) it just makes it far too easy for 'all students' to be tarred with this favourite brush of dropping standards. (and don't get me started on text speak!)
(and the post i was referring to repeatedly used the wrong spelling fwiw - one offs happen, but consistent mistakes jump out a bit more!):happyhear0 -
If you could rob a bank and know you would never ever get caught, would you do it?
Hehehehe
No because I'm not a selfish thieving b*****d. The money doesn't belong to you, it's someone elses and when you steal it out their pocket someone else goes without. If you don't pay back your student loans that's money the govt. could have used to fund future students or pensioners or the NHS or....I could go on and on basically it's a terribly selfish thing to do and you're stealing from society and the mouths of the less fortunate.0
