Legalities with selling an item with plug online?

i wanted to add a plug to an existing item. Can thisbe done or do I still need to have the whole unit tested by an outside regulator prior to reselling?

Is it legal for a business to sell an item without a plug these days?

The only things i can think of are items that need to be installed by an electrician, or where they recommend it is installed by an electrician.

Will your item pass fire and safety tests? If there is a fire inside the unit will it self extinguish?

  • Aside from the legalities, you also need public liability insurance in case of any issue with the electric items you sell.

Sorry for posting here but I can't seem to find a legal section within the forums, however the item in question relates to it being sold via online platforms such as ebay.

I am a crafter and make various items. I have recently been making clocks within a deep box frame which I've yet to start selling. I wanted to further extend the line of clocks and include neon lighting around the inside so am working on prototypes. I have an excellent UK supplier who are one of the most recognised in the UK manufacturing all their lighting with the correct CE markings and testing. Is it legal to place a light into a frame if it is plug operated? I know battery operated light are definitely legal to use but for some things that use plugs a full test is needed to be carried about by a recognised body prior to resale. However, in my case all i'm doing is putting the light into a frame casing so if the plug and light have already had CE tests carried out do I still need to have the whole unit tested out prior to resale?
The best thing to do is to check with your local Trading Standards, if possible ask to show it to them.
You can find them via your local council.
