I bought a cheap Titan during recent renovations and it worked fine and saved my more expensive Henry. Plaster dust and tiny bits can ruin a vacuum cleaner.

Even so, I'd sweep up anything the size of a pea rather than try to vacuum it. It only takes a couple of minutes to sweep a room before vacuuming and is cheaper than ending up with a broken vacuum cleaner.

If there is chance of asbestos, or lead paint, then short term wise would hire one, because the ones with H-type filters are often expensive.

Seriously, though, the Wickes machine costs under £40, is wet and dry, sucks and blows. My first one lasted 15 years and coped well with sawdust, lime dust and nasty, oily soot from the boiler flue. I’ve used it to blow out the dust from the deepest recesses of the car and for blow-drying garage items after washing. It’s been invaluable for emergency mopping up jobs, such as the occasional washing-machine accident and for cleaning out the muck in the central heating header tank. I’ve also found it can put more suction in a smaller area then my Dyson, so is great for really deep cleaning. All for a third of the cost of a Henry...

I've got the smallest Screwfix Titan wet and dry and it's brilliant, as said it sucks and blows, has a robust pipework and filter assembly with no stupid fiddly plastic parts to block or jam a la Dyson, and is ridiculously powerful, you have to watch it doesn't lift up the carpet too!

The plastic attachments can be a bit crap, but you can buy a set of metal ones for an additional few quid on eBay or use the ones from your old dead hoover as I did to make a really good machine!
