Barclays refusing PPI despite positive search for PPI

Hello Everyone

A newbie on here. I am hoping for some opinions on what I should do.
In the mid 1990s I took out two Barclays loans, a bank account and credit card (in different years I hasten to add!) but I know I was sold PPI on all these accounts as I remember the conversations I had with the various people who sold me the policies.

Fast forward to today, and having now realised I might be entitled to a refund on ppi as I was unemployed at the time and also pressured into buying the ppi, I completed an online Barclays form to reveal the accounts these pertained to. Barclays came to me and confirmed there was PPI on these accounts and provided me with account numbers and information on how to make a complaint.

Anyhow, I made a complaint using their forms. I did not have any paperwork relating to these accounts as they were taken out so long ago but thought I ought to still complain knowing I was missold.

After submitting my claims forms, Barclays wrote back to me with the same response to each enquiry stating that they cannot find any PPI on any of the accounts referred to.

Needless to say, I now feel completely stuck. Is it work forwarding this on to the FCA to investigate. It just doesn’t all add up to me.

Thanks for all your comments in advance.

Gav

The FCA don't deal with customer complaints, so you can't forward anything to them.

You can escalate to FOS, but if Barclays cannot find PPI on your accounts, it will be a waste of your time and theirs.

If you believe they've made a mistake, submit a SAR.

Thank you. Sorry, I did mean the FOS. If I ask for info from Barclays using a SAR, would it still yield results further back than 6 years do you know? . Many thanks.

It would depend on their record keeping of your account.
However, since the Bank have already officially denied your loans ever had PPI, I'd say it was very very unlikely that a SAR will somehow contradict this.

Similarly, the Ombudsman will not be able to magic up PPI which neither you nor the Bank can provide evidence of.

Looks like a blind alley you are going down.

It will reveal anything they hold on you.
  • Thank you both. I might see how I get along with a SAR request on one of the accounts just to be a bit more certain. If that reveals nothing I will have to leave it be. It’ll just have to be one of those life lessons. Never trust a bank; trust your own instincts! Ta

Although the caveat to that it that you could be wrong. I was once accused by someone for doing something I did not. They made a number of allegations against me and what I said and did. Yet I wasnt even working for the company in question at that time and was still at school.

Hello just read your post. I'm in a similar position with a Barclaycard but as mine closed in the early 1990's and I don't have any paperwork and Barclays say they cannot locate any details, it's stalled. What might help you is SAR because they can often find records from 1996/97 like your application form which should give you the start date and proof of ppi. However, what you will also need is proof of payment, like bank statements showing direct debits to Barclays. Hope this helps, sun73

Did you tell the bank you were unemployed when you applied for these loans/credit cards?

I have recently been looking into ppi for both myself and my partner I knew I had a Barclaycard back in the late 1990s I completed the Barclaycard enquiry form to see if I had ppi and I had a letter confirming that I did have ppi on a barclaycard following this I completed the online complaint form and like yourself then received a letter saying that they could not find any trace of any ppi being held by myself which I though was strange but just left this. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I receive another letter from Barclaycard reminding me that I haven’t yet complained about the ppi policy that was found following my enquiry??? I wrote to them again enclosing the letters confirming I had ppi and asked them to investigate again. I had a further letter advising that they were looking into my complaint and today I have had money transferred to my account from Barclaycard!!

So it may be worth contacting them with the original letter where they did confirm you had ppi.

I’m so glad I followed this up as I was in two minds to just leave it.
