I have recently applied to move house and it came to light during the credit checks I have a CCJ I knew nothing about on a previous address.
I contacted the courts who advised me it was from Eon.
When I moved into my previous address I lived there with my partner, 2 months later he moved out. The Eon account was in his name, therefore he called and closed the account and I set up a new account with a different energy provider.
A few months later I get a bill from Eon for £500 stating it’s a final bill after meter readings were provided. I disputed this as the account wasn’t in my name and the account had only been open for 2 months so how could a £500 bill be possible. I also didn’t know how to turn my heating on in the property for the first 6 months of living there and was only paying £30 a month with my new energy supplier. the agent at the time told me it would be investigated and I didn’t need to worry about paying the bill and they would contact me with the outcome.
Fast forward to now and I suddenly have a ccj for the unpaid bill. I have contacted Eon who state they sent me letters in January of this year stating the bill had been investigated and resolved and I was due to pay the amount, I’d failed to respond and court action had been taken. I asked why further attempts weren’t tried as they had my mobile number and email but hadn’t used these contact methods, but he agent stated their demand is too high to use these methods. I moved out of the property in question in November 2017 so I wouldn’t get the letters they were sending. Eon also note on their account they have had my post sent back to them, also proving I’ve not been notified of the bill.
Eon are staring I will have to dispute the ccj with the court, but reading into this it is going to be at a cost of £255 to myself!
I’m at a loss of where I stand or what action I can take at this point and what is best moving forward.
Is it worth going to the ombudsman about this? Or going back to the court?
I don’t want to have a ccj against me for the next 6 years when it was something I wasn’t even aware of!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Whose name was the account under?
Are you sure it wasn’t under your name or a joint name?
If it wasn’t your bill the you would need to pay the £255 to get it set aside or contact Eon and ask them to withdraw it0 -
I’m fair confident it was set up in my ex partners name and he just passed on my details incase I wanted to set up an account with them.
If it’s set aside would it still remain on my file?0 -
If the CCJ was set aside, it would then be removed from you credit files. You can apply to have help with the court fees, if you have evidence that you are on low income.
Because of the fee, I would personally be tempted to make a written complain to Eon in the first instance, clearly stating why you would not owe the amount claimed. I would include your assertion that you remained in contact with Eon, how you disputed the £500 bill, how you argued it was too high for two months use. Basically, you need to do this stuff in writing rather than on the phone...I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.
I love my job0 -

Energy switches between suppliers are not instantaneous.
Most likely the Eon account was switched from your partner's name into yours, and then you applied to switch to an other supplier which took effect a few weeks later.
Plus, of course, the Eon account that was put in your name might have had a balance on it. You were, after all living there. What arrangement did you have with your partner regarding who was paying?
So it's very likely you did owe Eon something.A few months later I get a bill from Eon for £500 stating it’s a final bill after meter readings were provided. I disputed this as the account wasn’t in my name and the account had only been open for 2 months so how could a £500 bill be possible. ...
Perhaps your ex shafted you?I also didn’t know how to turn my heating on in the property for the first 6 months of living there and was only paying £30 a month with my new energy supplier. the agent at the time told me it would be investigated and I didn’t need to worry about paying the bill and they would contact me with the outcome. ...
The agent was talking b0ll0x. You should have engaged with Eon,..
I moved out of the property in question in November 2017 so I wouldn’t get the letters they were sending.
Royal Mail redirection would have sorted that out, given that you didn't tell Eon...
Eon also note on their account they have had my post sent back to them, also proving I’ve not been notified of the bill....
You mean the £500 final bill you'd already received?..

Make a formal complaint to Eon. It seems a bit carp that they failed to utilise your mobile number and email if only to ask 'what is your new address'.0
