If you can sprinkle a small amount of seed, either mixed in with a little leftover compost, or rake the soil loose, then seed, now is a good time to do it. Else the weeds may claim the space!

weeds have claimed lots of my bald lawn,
the grass roots are tightly meshed in first 15mm of soil I need the edge of the spade to cut though them,
was going to hire petrol lawn corer but hire shop scraped it

I sort of scarified the bauld patches and then sprinkled on seed. Im guessing I will just have to see what happens now

I scarified my lawn, but even at the deepest the scarifier only got 10mm into the soil, and that just did not get though the grass roots

The temperature of the ground now is really good for sowing grass seed - I sowed into the bald patches and the new grass was visible after about 4 days. I'm not going to mow now - just leave it to see if it sorts itself out

I think there is probably one mow left given the warm weather this weekend
The new seed is starting to take. Will it be ok to mow mover it next week. If I dont the grass will be very long come spring

I’d be pretty wary of cutting new grass after all this rain. Unless your mower is super sharp (it may be, but most are not and definitely unlikely this late in the season!) you risk pulling the new grass out by the roots. Probably better to accept a woolly lawn over the winter and gradually reduce the height in spring.

Does it matter is the grass is a few inches long over winter? It's not like it's going to get any longer till March.

Given the stress it has had this summer (not seen the grass this dead since 1976) I'm going to give it the best chance to grow where it wants.

We're busy seeding some patches of new turf that didn't take (in hindsight would prob have been cheaper to re turf those patches but hey ho). Going to mow the rest of the lawn but avoid that area and just tackle that next spring I think.
