Dad’s Army, the zenith of the British broad-comedy ensemble sitcom, follows a hap-hazard group of men who were prevented by age or some other disability from enlisting in the services. These men enrolled as Local Defence Volunteers, forming Britain’s ‘last line of defence’. The series, written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft continued for 9 series, between 1968 and 1977.
All the favourite Christmas moments from Captain Mainwaring and his troops are united in Dad’s Army: Christmas Specials, available on DVD this November. The Yuletide festivities featured are:

With the vicar, the verger, and Mr Hodges as judges, the platoon races to hoist their flag from the church tower.
• My Brother And I - Broadcast in 1975. As Mainwaring prepares to host a sherry party for local civil dignitaries and army officers, Private Frazer is having an interesting encounter on the train with a drunken figure who has more than a passing resemblance to his captain. But when Mainwaring’s black-sheep brother Barry arrives in Walmington, the family welcome is less than warm…
• The Love Of Three Oranges – Broadcast in 1976. As Christmas is coming, the vicar is hosting a bazaar to raise money for comforts for troops. With Mrs Mainwaring unable to attend after an unfortunate incident with the bath enamel, the Captain is determined to win her one of the three oranges that Hodges has put up for auction. However, the Warden is equally determined that he doesn’t…
