council tax reduction - savings

Hi,

Just wondering if anybody get a council tax reduction even though you have savings below £16000? i.e 10000? According to my LA website, you can get council tax reduction even though you have some savings up to £16000.

And does 25% single person discount mean tested?

Thanks.

San

No , it's based only on a test of facts, which in simplified terms asks - Are you the only adult who has their 'sole or main residence' in the property (or are there other adults who are all disregarded) ? If yes, a discount applies.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

If your LA has £16000 limit then yes you can apply if you have savings below this.

The single person's discount is not means tested.

Put your details into the benefit calculator here to get an estimate of what you might get.

Every local authority can now set it's own rules so there is no standard answer. If your local authority says you can apply with savings less than £16,000 then you may get some cTR depending on your circumstances. It is likely that savings over £6,000 will be taken into account at the rate of assumed income of £1/week for every £250 over £6,000, so for £10,000 would be assumed income of £16/week. Exact details will depend on details for your local authority.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Except if they are a pensioner - and then the national default scheme and thus the £16k maximum limit applies with a taper above £10k.

There are as you say big differences in policies for working age claimants though - including on savings limits. Some still have the £16k limit - some as low as £6k and that may drop further as budgets tighten.

Of course, I should have mentioned that.
