EDF Smart Meter Question

I had a smart meter installed by EDF. It is currently set to send meter readings once a day. I noticed after a few weeks that my online account balance was not being adjusted with these readings. I expected my online balance to be updated frequently with correct readings.

The portable thing they gave me says my billing cycle is every 31 days.
Due to my tariff i should not phone them but have to contact them by online chat.
I have contacted SWEETY by online chat who says they only use the actual readings and generate a bill once per year. This seems unbelievable, i do have a email transcript of this online chat. SWEETY said i can contact them by online chat every month if i want them to produce an accurate bill and see my correct account balance. It can sometimes take a very long time to get connected to there online chat.

Is this really how smart meters work? What is the point of sending them daily readings if they only use them once per year? Surely SMARTY has made a mistake?

Does anyone else have a smart meter with EDF? How often are your meter readings used and your account balance updated?

  • OP,
My son was with EDF dual-fuel tariff from July 2017 (when he moved into his new house) until early September this year. He submitted readings online every month and the bills were generated a few days later and were viewable online. He does not have functioning Smart Meters.

EDF adjusted his monthly D/D several times during the year,..i.e.

    July 2017-Nov 2017 £81
    Dec 2017-May 2018 £77
    June 2018 – Aug 2018 £57

They also issued a credit refund in May 2018 of approx. £100

All the D/D adjustments and the credit refund in May’18 were totally unprompted. I assume??? it was done automatically by EDF’s billing system. The tariff was called EDF’s Online Saver August 2018.

He had no direct contact with EDF throughout his entire time with EDF and when he left them recently they issued his final credit refund 21 days later. All very impressive by EDF to be honest.

Make of that what you will. :)

You can track your daily energy use in MyAccount on the" Energy Graphs" page.

The In Home Display also shows cumulative use in units and £/p in the "periods" menu

If your are on Monthly Fixed Direct Debit, entering a meter reading manually will generate a bill and show you your balance, it may also initiate a change to your DD.

EDF will automatically read the meter twice a year, on your annual review date and 6 months later, that is the only time your account balance will change.

I have just changed to Direct Debit Whole Amount (Monthly), so EDF now read the meter once a month automatically, create a bill and take the balance by DD 14 working days later, so I am now only paying for what I have used.

Your meter could be set (even by yoiu via your online account) to send readings every 30 mins ... but you won't get a bill every 30 mins ;)

Eventually, it is expected that more 'time of use' tariffs will be introduced that smart metered customers can take advantage of ... and that obviously requires details of what you use and when.
It's not related to billing frequency.

In the meantime, there are still advantages to settting your meter reading transmission to every 30mins
