Best value city break?

  • Feb half term will be cold in Poland generally with snow. I went to Tallinn and Riga at this time of year and they were both fabulous and very reasonably priced. I love Berlin and there's plenty to do and accommodation is reasonably priced - we usually stay in the budget Ibis as the public transport system is so good you're never far from a stop. Tons to do for free - free walking tour, Topographie des Terrors, Sachenshausen, Reichstag roof, Brandenburg gate and Holocaust Memorial. Wherever you go check out if there is an 'In your pocket' free downloadable guide to the city to give you ideas of what to do, where to eat for good value food etc

We were in Berlin in the summer and loved it.

Great public transport so easy to get around soif you did want to save a bit of money and stay a bit further out I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

We got one of these https://www.berlin-welcomecard.de/en which is both a travel pass and gets you discounts off entry into various museums/attractions

I loved Warsaw. Loads to see and do and very good public transport. Plenty of places to eat. While we used good restaurants in the evenings, at lunchtime there was a super food court in the shopping centre attached to the main railway station. One place was a buffet where they charged by weight. That was the weight of the food not the diner!!

Just came back from Warsaw. Very impressed. The old down is beautifully restored, and it's a very good value city.

Berlin is probably the best value capital city in western Europe (with the possible exception of Porto) but for real value you need to head east and out of the Eurozone.

I'm planning a long weekend for mid-November and on my shortlist are Gdansk and the three Baltic capitals (just can't decide which)

Dosh.....get yourself into Transylania. Allow at least a couple of weeks, and do....

    - Fly to Bucharest [Tarom Airlines]
    - Overnight close to Gare de Nord train station, eg Ibis
    - train to Sinaia
    - train to Sighisoara
    - train to Sibiu
    - train to Brasov
    - train back to Bucharest

You won't regret it, everywhere is fabulous, and terrific value. Bit dodgy around Bucharest train station, but we never felt threatened any more than we do being out in the dark at home.

I wish I'd binned South East Asia a while ago.....Central Europe, particularly outside of the €uro is great.

A 2 week train tour of central and eastern Europe sounds like great fun but unfortunately I don't have the time this year - I won't even be able to do my usual fortnight in SE Asia - so I'm having to make do with a few short breaks.

Gdansk is a beautiful place to visit. I went this February and the previous November and although it was very cold, it was still very enjoyable.
Food and drink very reasonably priced and very good.
I can recommend the Ibis Stare Miasto as a good and cheap hotel, with the bonus of my favourite restaurant Swojski Smak being right opposite.
Gdansk is relatively compact so you can walk round and see the sights.
The Solidarity museum is the best museum I have ever been to.
Trams and trains are also very cheap.
If you have a look on the tripadvisor forum for Poland there are some posters who have done very interesting and helpful trip reports.

I think that's why it's important for posters to tell us what they're looking for in a weekend break.

I've not been to Bologna but agree with all the others except Milan. I liked Milan. We had 3 days there visited the cathedral (inside and roof), did a tour of the San Siro, saw a fantastic art exhibition, strolled around the architecture, ate loads of lovely Italian food..... What's not to like?

Yes, apparently they had Canaletto paintings of the original town that had survived so they copied those.
