TV aeriel splitter / booster advice please.

Hi all,

Up to today just had a TV in living room fed direct from aerial point in same room, we are on top floor of a 3 storey purpose built apartment block, so obviously there is a communal aerial on top of roof somewhere, and picture quality always been fine.

Bought out daughter a new TV for her bedroom which adjoins living room, with previous TV she had a set-top aerial, but results were never brilliant .
So i drilled through the wall and ran some cable through..

I purchased a metal aerial splitter from Amazon ( cheap but had good reviews ) Its " T" shaped - plugged it in back of living room TV, existing TV cable in one side of it, and new cable in other side..

However pictures on both TV's are now degraded ( i half expected this, but the splitter was a cheap option to try first )

Have unplugged it as my daughter can use Netflix on her TV for now.

Presumably i need a combined splitter/booster now ?

Questions are :

(1) Anyone have recommendations for a decent one ?

(2) Do i plug it in back of living room TV as i did with splitter, or plug into living room aerial point, then run the cables from there ?

Thanks for listening !

I've had a 'one for all' 4 way booster in my loft doing it's job for years - they do do a two way as well. The incoming aerial lead plugs in to the booster then 2 cables plug in - 1 for each tv

Was the picture on both TV's poor quality with picture artefacts such as coloured blocks? Does removing one connection to one of the TV's improve the picture on the remaining TV and was it then acceptable?

Digital TV operates well when there is reasonable reception and quickly falls off (Digital Cliff) as the signal strength deteriorates.

There might be a poor cable connection where you fitted the RF plug.

You could get a powered amplifier with 2 or more outputs. Attach that to the Aerial connection where it enters your property. Then run two or more cables to the rooms that need TV.

There might be some wireless device that can do a similar thing without cables but I dislike them.

I cannot recommend anything because all the sites that I have used in the past no long seem to be alive.

I would change the cable from the output box first .
I have the same T splitter = no channel 95 replaced cable and all working on both outputs .

Did the splitter have one plug and two sockets or one socket and two plugs?

If you plugged the splitter into the back of the TV and the aerial to one side and the second TV to the other side as described, you have connected the aerial feed to one of the splitter outputs along with the second TV to the other output!

You should have plugged the splitter into the aerial wall outlet socket and then connected both TV cables to the splitter outputs.

To use a splitter the way that you fitted it into the back of the TV, you would need a different type of splitter, aerial IN socket to two male OUT plugs.

A normal distributed signal should be strong enough to be split to feed two TV's but if it does not work when the passive splitter is connected correctly, then you will need an amplified splitter to maintain signal levels.

    Hi Thorganby,

The splitter i have looks the first one you have pictured.

The " IN" is male, which i plugged into TV, and the 2 " OUT" are female, which i connected to aerial lead from aerial point, and to aerial lead from 2nd TV.

So as you say i have connected it all wrong < DOH > :o

I will have to order some more aerial cable, as the cable from bedroom TV will not reach the aerial point in living room ( I did get a longer cable than i needed, to reach living room TV )

Thanks for your feedback and everyone else who replied as well :T

Screwfix sell all the bits you need if you want to buy stuff today.

I would buy an amplified splitter anyway

As you describe using it, the main TV will get a proper signal (albeit at -4dB due to the splitter loss). The bedroom TV would get zip, nada, nowt.

You need a cable joiner and a TV-TV plug fly lead to connect:
Aerial -> coupler -> IN of splitter
    Out 1 -> fly lead - > main TV
    Out 2 -> lead -> bedroom.

But as the main set was upset with a small 4dB signal reduction, it seems likely that a low gain amplified splitter is required. (Although highly unusually for a communal aerial system).

Brand? I'd avoid SLX/Philex/OneforAll. Proception is recommended by a pro installer who freely gives information via his website.
