Can't download BT emails

Is anyone-else having a problem with accessing their BT emails (through Outlook)? Our BT Broadband service has been unreliable for a week now and suddenly Outlook isn't downloading my emails (from yesterday) or my phone. (I can access them direct on the BT server). Message I get on my phone is: Couldn't open connection to Server

On my emails:

Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Nothing has changed from our end, but suddenly there's no service. Contact with BT livechat (3 different people) has resulted in them offering to send us a booster (because there are now more Wifi accounts in the area which, they say, may be interfering with ours).

Has anyone-else had this issue?

  • As you have had no other responses.......

    It is difficult to tell for non BT users that do not use email from them and not via your system and without much in the way of technical details. It does however sound like you are getting the run around from BT!
    The messages you get do indicate lack of response (or timely response) from BT's server but at present the reason for that is unknown.

    You could do some investigation and then get back to BT? The steps below should help in deciding win general where the problem lies and then what to do! Some tests might seem irrelevant but all help to create the picture of the problem.

    Post you device (laptop?) type and model and which operating system you use.

    Are your BB problems over? (ignore email issue for the moment). Is it now reliable?

    Try a broadband speed checker. The BT wholesale one will give good results for BT as an ISP (BT still is your ISP?). post results for speed and latency.
    If it is very slow things might 'time out' so you then need to look at your router to exchange performance. We can tell you how to do that.

    Can you get a decent wi-fi signal (presumption you are not wired connection via ethernet - and if not try it as that will rule out wi-fi issues!);

    Access the internet via a browser to web sites other than BT email (such as MSE forum, Google etc.) Is that OK? If not can you try a different web browser or a different device (tablet, computer etc.)

    If connections are OK then download Malwarebytes Free and run a scan. post any adverse results and allow to delete or quarantine them.

    If you can (or somebody else can) post the IP address of the BT server connection then a Ping test can be done that will check connection from your device to that address.

    Now, if all the above checks (someone now might add more) are fine then then if you cannot access your email via the BT web pages then you need to go back to them armed with the above info. Ignore Outlook access for the moment. Come back on here for more advice throughout the above checks if necessary and before speaking to BT.
