Buying a “valuable” original registration plate

Haven’t posted for quite awhile, but having googled to death and not found anything on this I thought I would try good old MSE forums.

I went to view a car, which turned out to not be suitable, but the registration on it just happened to spell my name. It’s the original number plate that came with the car, so not a ‘cherished’ personalised plate. The seller is happy to sell the plate to me separately, as I don’t want the car, but neither of us are sure how to do this. Anyone know?
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks guys!

The DVLA site explains how to transfer plates off a car, get a replacement onw for the car and sell/transfer the original plate.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Yes, thanks for responding, but I thought this just applied to a ‘personalised’ plate, where this would go on retention and the original registration is re-assigned to the car. Plate can then be sold separately obviously. So do you think it’s exactly the same process for an original plate?

Would the DVLA just put a completely new reg on the car free of charge if an owner wanted to sell the original plate?

Obviously I’ll ring the DVLA Monday but just wondering if anyone had any actual knowledge or experience with this specific situation.

    Thanks anyway!

There really isn't any such thing as a personalised plate. All registration numbers are just registration numbers and the same rules apply. The DVLA will just provide an unissued age related number for the seller's car.

They're not doing it free of charge - it's just built in to the transfer fee.

One thing to check is whether or not the plate can be transferred. Some plates are marked non-transferable. I doubt that applies to the original plate from the car, but it will probably apply to whatever age-related plate the DVLA supply to the chap with the car to replace this one. So he can't then sell that plate, get another, sell that, and so on.

taking the plate off the car will delay the sale for the current owner

as mentioned above the registered keeper will go online and request to put the current plate on retention and then pay the retention fee, the car will be issued a new age related number to go on the car, make up a set of plates for the car that has been issued a new number sit back and wait for V5 to arrive and once this happens the car can then be sold, if you get on it now you may have the V5 showing the new number by the end of the week depending how busy the DVLA are at present

You better check that the number can be transferred before parting with any money.

If its an original plate then, unless its a very old car, the plate will be year related so remember you will not be able to put that reg on a car older than that year but you can put it on a newer car.
