    probably the best advice although it did cross my mind that instead of panicking when the fund goes down just add some more money in the hope it picks up again.

    Yes, the rationale used to be that the contribution limit was set lower on cash ISAs than S&S ISAs, to encourage share investments. If you could transfer back from S&S to cash, you'd effectively get a higher contribution limit for cash than the government wanted.

    Now that the limit is £20k total and it can be all cash or all S&S if you want, there's no need to prevent S&S to cash transfers anymore.

    PS I'd forgotten all about the "NISA" label! Talk about throwback, um, Saturday :)
