Tax Credits Childcare Payments - how does it work with estimates vs reality?

I'm new to needing childcare, my wife has started working a 30 hour job as well as my 9-5, and in addition to after school club we'll need school holiday care at least for the eldest two. Unfortunately the school don't run any holiday clubs.

Right now I want to update my tax credits, but I don't really know what to tell them about childcare costs yet. School is £70 a week, but I don't have an actual arrangement with a childminder/nanny for holidays yet, so don't have a clear idea of how much that will be. Plus, of course, we don't know yet if we will be able to book any/much time off during school holidays.

Am I better off estimating childcare at the lower end of what I think it'll be and can I then update later in the year or at renewal with the actual figure?

Do they ask for proof of anything, other than if they're suspicious and random spot checks?
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.
