Lovely. Why not go and put it all on red at the casino instead, as the odds probably aren't very different.

  • tony - Maybe try 2 funds if you can get £500 in each. A UK Equity Income & a Global fund.

fimonkey - since you have a lot of money in cash you might want to take more risk - a global managed & an emerging markets.

I assume both are for long term.

Books to read - H-L have various guides and the Daily Telegraph has a couple of excellent guides on ISA investing (along with many others).

I haven't come accross a book which goes through specifically fund by fund but H-L will send you their Investment Times which has their Wealth 150 and notes on each of these funds.

Chelsea Finanacial Services has a newsletter called Viewpoint which also has good info and includes some guides on sector allocation.

Do note that sector allocation is interesting in that one advisors cautious might be another ones adventurous. I compared Best Invests Chelsea FS and Fundsnetwork the other day and there were quite a few differences between the defintions and the allocations. Far from me to say any were wrong, you just have to pick one that suits you. It does lead one to conclude that there is absolute 'right' in allocation and that there is room for flexibility.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry - should read 'It does lead one to conclude that there is NO absolute 'right' in allocation and that there is room for flexibility'.

For the funds - you might want to drip the money in month by month since this will smooth a bit of the volatility.

Just had a look back over the thread and thought I should explain that some posts have been removed, presumably when the user who posted them was banned for various rule violations. I'm not replying to something that wasn't said, honest ;)

What was your reasoning for investing in this company?

What was your reasoning for recommending that people should buy CFM? When did you buy and sell yourself? Do you still hold it?

The reason for the modertors being unhappy should be obvious from the stock chart: you bought three weeks ago at 20.7, mentioned it here at about 27.5, the volume and price rose within hours and you got out at 42 having made 14 more per share than you'd have received had you sold before posting.

It's the sort of thing that trips market manipulation alarms and the sort of thing that email stock scammers try to do.

Collective investments (unit trusts, OEICs) are a completely different thing because of their size and range of investments, so the prices can't be changed readily. Same for large cap and most non-UK stocks. But when it comes to small cap it's a different story.

I've no idea whether you intended any of this but it looks like a good example of how a post saying buy can raise volume and price and give a profit for the person doing the talking. If deliberate and if the post really was the main cause of the change, it would be both contrary to the don't post from self-interest rule here and the sort of thing that could get you prison time.

Regardless of your own intentions, you can probably see why Martin doesn't think it's a good idea for this place.

There is a genuine reason why those shares went up! See here.

I think the mods weren't happy because he posted a tip without any reasoning to back up his claim which made it seem like he spamming.

Not to mention the fact that it was a totally inappropriate recommendation for the risk level of the person asking for advice!

meinnit, "agreed on Wednesday" is what the story says so that rules out that particular bit of public information being a factor on Tuesday. Also not mentioned by rambo1987 as a reason. But it does leave the possibility of insiders trading on advance knowledge that the deal might be done. The story merely noted "The shares surged 25.9 percent to 42.50 pence by 1433 GMT after rising 22 percent on Tuesday" re the Tuesday change.

Agreed also re the spamming though. It's routine in email and is common enough here for other things.
