Hot water but no central heating

Hi all,

Like many, we've just turned the central heating on for the first time this year (time for gas bills to increase). However, it didn't work! We have had no problems with hot water but don't get central heating. If we try to turn the boiler on just for central heating it wont fire, but fires fine when the hot water is turned on. When both hot water and central heating are set to come on, we only get hot water.

A bit of internet research suggests that it might be a divertor valve issue. Does this sound about right to anyone here that knows about heating systems (i've no idea so we'll need a plumber to do any replacements).

Sounds like it, probably just the synchronous motor inside the divertor valve seized or the valve itself gone stiff.

Do a bit more research and you might find you can do it yourself. The biggest nause I found was draining the system down but I managed to change mine easily enough once I identified it.
