Debit card overlap period

I received new Co-op debit card this morning, valid from 09/18 and used it for a small contactless purchase in a shop.

A couple of hours later, I made a payment through the Barclaycard app, (where details of debit cards are saved) and used the CVV from my old card valid to end 10/18.

In the past I've always destroyed 'old' card on receipt of the new one. Is it standard practice to be able to use 2 cards concurrently on the same account during the overlap period?

Yes as the old card has not expired yet.

The old card has not yet expired and so it is still valid - you can use either to make purchases.

    Thanks

I'd assumed that once the new one had been used, the old one would automatically be deactivated.

When I sent my new debit card from Barclays, I was told the old one would be cancelled as soon as I used the new one. That makes perfect sense to me.

I don't think many other banks work that way. From my experience the old card will usually still work until its expiry date.
