Death Certificate IHT402

This is a second query (I had a previous post, where I got help).
I am completing form IHT 402 in relation to my aunt and her spouse who died intestate in 1983.
In box 8 it asks for a copy of the grant of representation and gives the link https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate/search-for-probate-records
Or alternatively asks for a death certificate giving the link www.gro.gov.uk
There was no grant for my Uncle though it was administered in London in 1984 and I have the code. As regards the GRO link, the search form provided does not appear to offer death certificates after 1957.
I did read somewhere that you could go direct to the Register office if you know where he died but that sounds rather cumbersome even if I can find out which one.
I was hoping to deal with this quickly and saw you could get a priority death certificate but I can't see how to do a search after 1957?? Is GRO only for family tree type stuff?
If not should I apply for the Administration file? Shame that seems to take longer?
Many thanks in advance Peter

Can you order by phone?

Seems very strange to limit online search to pre 19570 -
Well thanks.
I rang the number and the lady who answered, got me there eventually, but you have to do it from the main menu, which when signed in already didn't appear; don't search the index, don't click on death, you have to click on 'place an order' from the main menu. Not exactly intuitive.
Anyway all ordered now. (The pre 1957 stuff can be ordered cheaper if you don't need a certified copy, but is no good for official stuff).
Funnily enough, I was just thinking that the info from the IHT402 form was wrong on both counts as the link for the "search will" which I posted above but got from my form was actually wrong and should be: https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate
and not the longer link above.
I think you gave me this on my last post, so double thanks for helping me twice,0 -
AFAIK all copies of birth certificates issued by the GRO are verified since they are all certified copies of the entry in the GRO registers. Therefore I cannot see why any further certification should be needed however I have come across some banks that cannot grasp this fact. I am not aware of any difference with pre 1957 certificates. I have certainly never found any in my thirty plus years of genealogical research.Well thanks.

Not any longer - for the past couple of years GRO has also offered un-certified copies of historic birth and death records as pdf images delivered on-line. These are a lower price (£6) than the printed certified copy sent through the post (£9.25) and are aimed at those who only want the information and don't need the legal validity.
Historical records are classed as births over 100 years old, and deaths over 50 years old, which is why their on-line index ( which relates to digitised records) currently only shows births to 1917 and to 1957 for deaths.0
