Npower smart meters

I am being badgered by NPower to have smart meters, I have two questions - does the new smart gas meter show cubic metres. Also do the meters show a cumulative reading just like the old fashioned meters. I want to keep using my spreadsheet with consumption readings going on the same basis as currently (sad I know but useful!)

Can't help with your query, but I've just had an email to say NPower are coming to fit mine, despite my continually rejecting their "offers"

If I can't stop them I'll let you know the answer!

I don't want one, the old ones work perfectly well (in my favour I'm sure)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

All modern gas meters - smart or dumb - now record gas usage in CM3s and electricity usage in kWhs. They will also show a cumulative reading; however, depending on the meter manufacturer the reading may be tricky to obtain. Some gas IHDs do show gas usage in kWhs: presumably, they use a generic calculation (x 11.22)

    Hi peter.video

    Thanks for your post.

With our smart meters (both SMETS1 and SMETS2) you can choose how to show your usage, either in cubic meters (for gas), kWH, CO2 or £s. The display will also give you the option to check your usage today, yesterday, the past week, month or year.

If you use a spreadsheet to keep an eye on your usage, having a smart meter and either using the IHD (In Home Display) and/or the npower app will allow you to keep track of this. Our app currently updates on the 1st of each month but we are looking to have it update in real time as the display does.

If you have any further questions then drop us a message using the details on our profile page.

    Kind regards

    Jess :)

  • Jess, thanks, my aim is to record the daily gas and electricity consumption so am I correct in understanding that this smart meter will give me that in cu metres (gas) and Kwh (elec) to carry on with my consumption database. Would the app allow me to find this out remotely[?
I am on a 2 year contract with nPower but if I want to change suppliers can you assure me that your SMETS2 smart meter is now usable as a smart meter by all the other main suppliers (eg Eon) and semi- main stream suppliers such as Ecotricity or Bulb?. Thanks

SMETS2 meters are not supplier dependent and they no longer connect directly to any given supplier. They connect to a central hub - The Data Communications Company. The question that you need to ask any potential supplier of your choosing is 'are you able to take meter data from The DCC'? As far as I know, not all suppliers are yet registered with The DCC. Moreover, and more worryingly, consumers in the north of England and Scotland will find that a SMETS2 meter cannot yet connect to The DCC because of comms provider issues - according to various websites. It is all a very big mess and missed promises/deadlines. Octopus, for example, are telling me that they are HOPING to start the rollout of SMETS2 meters next year.
