Car insurance

My son recently had his insurance cancelled due to not sending a dvla code, he takes full responsibility but my argument with the insurer was they failed to tell us via the letter, also they never cancelled a previous insurance we had and continued to take payment.
To cut to the chase he was paying £120 month and now there wanting £800 genuine mistake with the code as he had only sent it to them not but 8 weeks prior when first taking out the car insurance. Any advice has I have made a formal complaint and still yet to hear and the advisor was really rude and told me there was nothing they could do, my son is now not able to be insured for a genuine mistake
