Doing the right thing?

A friend in Worthing made redundant some time ago has been unable to get another job. He's in his late 50s and grew with the company he worked for over 25 years. No real qualifications but did a damn good job in a senior position. He decided to go to the bank to convert his mortgage to interest only, budgeting redundancy money to keep up reduced payments until he finds work again. Having made an appointment with the bank, he's shown into a room with a telephone and spends the next two hours talking to a call centre! He had difficulty with the accents, wasn't sure they actually understood the position or the fact that he'd done his own budgeting. In the end he's told he's still classed as being in arrears, it'll be on his credit file for 6 years and basically came away feeling like a worthless idiot. Can this be right? Is this really the way to treat people who are doing the right thing? Shame on the banks for doing this to people who are trying to take charge of their own problems to prevent bad situations becoming crises. They need to speak with people face to face, and work with them to find solutions not treat them like brainless nobodies.
Anyone out there thinking of "doing the right thing" ... forget it. Soldier on until you're forced into action!
Rant over.
