Thanks everyone... I had the joy of emptying my wheelie bins in the dark last night.

The green one wasn't too bad because it was all my own rubbish, and it was tied up neatly in plastic bags anyway... but the orange one was disgusting! There was all sorts of stuff the previous owners had left in there, most of it soggy, and some was stuck to the bottom and wouldn't shake off, so I had to crawl inside the wheelie bin and peel it off!!! Ugh...

My neighbours think I'm so weird now...

But tomorrow morning it will be gone, and I feel very pleased with myself :-) Guess advice to home-movers - don't put it off, get in touch with your council straight away and ask for information about local services!

    Hi Badger lady
your experience describes the state we are all in - we need to recycle, we want to recycle but there are too many different systems!
In such a small country (I am thinking UK here) it would seem logical to have a unified national system to maximise the effect, or am I being naive?

Does seem so logical... it's easy to work out the French system, I only stayed there for 2 weeks with my friend and we straight away could see what to do:

    - Community Biffa bin at the end of each road (so you just take your black sack down the road and dump it there)

    - Community recycling bins in 3 or 4 places around the village - slots labelled "glass", "plastic" etc, so we just took our other black bag up there and filled it up.

Hardly takes bin men any time to do their collection (because there are a small number of large bins), residents don't have to overly worry about schedules (e.g. rolling your wheelie bin onto the pavement on a certain day), and all the recycling is pre-separated, which must make it more efficient to process..?

Because collections are so quick, each bin round covers a large area and collects loads of waste, so there's economy of scale too... you're right, a national scale should surely be more efficient.

I worry every time I hear about new rules coming into force (PAYG bins!!!).

  • i'm from newport and they will not take black bags (h+s apperntly)

You can either squeeze some in a bin every week or take it down the dump, which is just by maesglas industrial estate , it has recycling and everything there.

Golly, Lolly! I don't know the answer, but you'll probably find it here: http://www.newport.gov.uk/_dc/index.cfm?fuseaction=wasterecycle.whenwecollect

If your street name isn't on the list, you probably aren't covered - there are contact details on there for people that can help you out.
