Also I would be surprised if it didn't say on every one of the architects drawings that all dimensions, levels and setting out is to be checked on site prior to building work.

Admittedly it is a frustrating mistake but builders quite often just speed ahead without checking on site measurements.

They quite clearly said that the architect had made mistakes measuring. The builders are not at fault.

If I had paid for an architect I would expect them to have done it properly and I would also expect that I would not be penalised for their mistake.

If it was not possible to do what the architect had drawn, then I would expect them to come up with a solution that works for both parties, not one that only one party would not only not want, not like, but be expected to pay for.

I don't know if the architect has liability insurance. It will be one of my first questions. Do they have to have it?

Yes, if they're "proper" architects, i.e. members of RIBA and you'd also be able to make a formal complaint to the professional body if they don't co-operate/pay. If not, i.e. you've used an unqualified/unregulated firm of "planners", then probably not. You need to check their letterhead and also the letter of engagement upon their appointment.

If it says on the architects drawings that the measurements should be checked then why wouldnt have they been checked from day 1. I always tell builders that they are to check the measurements and set out the build from day 1.

They have not been penalised for the mistake. Like I said if the correct measurements were taken from the start the solutions would be the same as what is available to them now. The OP has said they are happy with the changing the existing roof but not happy with the costs. I was just pointing out that the costs would have been there if the architect measured correctly from the start.

You need to check they are registered Architects not members of the RIBA. Architects dont need to be members of the RIBA. They have to have PI insurance if registered with the ARB.
