Cash Windfall

Hi all,
I have been fortunate to inherit some cash and now have £14000 to invest. Should I stay clear of stock market related products and look for high interest short term deposits? My wife is a non taxpayer.
Any advice apreciated
Sorry for lack of detail.
We are both in late fifties, I am retired with a pension of app. 25k and we have no mortgage. Some income would be helpful, but probably we would prefer to use this for income and growth as sums like this do not come round too often. Because of what is happening with the banks etc we are a bit conservative in our view of stock markets and perhaps favour high interest deposit accounts. Any views?
